I am interested in the amount of grain in the original
I believe this is the original... if it was re-scaled, the white dots on the dome would have been blurred, and not exactly 1 pixel big.

Vlado>>> Yes, I noticed that too. And I might have misunderstood something, but I think he said this on the first page:
      rendertime about 3 hours @2240x1530 each image, on a x2 4800, 3850000 polygons
*edit* Of course that could be a region in the first place and not a scaled-down version. *edit*

of course the pictures were scaled, but also sharpened to save some details, here is a direct link to a bigger version, save it and scale it down, then apply a sharpener in photoshop and you'll see, eacht dot will take a pixel again

            thank you paulison,
here some details about the first image:
lens is a 48mm/41.112deg. with a camera correction modifier. Color mapping is linear multiply, 0.7 dark and 1.2 bright. Enviroment skylight multiplier 0.41 rgb-> 255,156,117. Indirect illumination is lightcache, progressive pathtracing, primary 0.85, secondary bounce 0.7, 9999 subdivisions, but canceled after about 3 hours. Postprocessing, a bit color correction and a lens blur done with zbuffer.
