    hey guys,

here's are some images from a personal project. it's a house i designed and had built a few years ago, but i've always come back to it to work on lighting and work out some details i wasn't happy with in the final construction...still working on the details...comments welcome.
i'm pretty pleased with the overall lighting (one sunlight and hdri skylight), but there are some persistent dark splotches that i can't seem to get rid of (notice around door frames and trim). i can make them slightly less obvious by cranking up the min / max rates, but then my render times go through the roof. right now a 1600x1200 render takes about 17min using IR and LC. any technical suggestions would be welcome.

looks good dynaman. You might want to chamfer some of the edges everything is looking too sharp

Good start, but things are looking too clean and perfect. Maybe add some bumps maps to things, or some gaps or joints to some of your woodwork. Also, the sofa looks a bit plastic. Maybe add some noise modifier to the cushions or something.

watch out for that painting on the walls! the painting is running throug the sides!
i think ur shadows r too sharp and with such burned areas i d guess the overall lighting would be less dark...i miss some blueish bouncin in there too...ah and the background does not match!
        this is promising!Keep us updated!

there's nothing strictly wrong with that. it's how a few art forgeries are found because a forgerer can't see the sides of a piece of art when they are hidden by a frame.

but to be correct the art should wrap around the sides, not be 'extruded'.

I agree wit ene.xis with the lack of blueish color that can enhance your overal color range.

Also, pay attention to your image levels and curves, you can do that in photoshop after, but it's always better to have a nice result direct form the render engine.

It did this quick test in photoshop, levels, curves and a quick bloom

                  thanks for the suggestions.
pixelab - wow! what a huge improvement. maybe a bit too bright, but definitely much better overall. i usually do post work in photoshop but hadn't tried it with these. sometimes you don't know what you're missing until you try. if i wanted to achieve a similar effect from within vray, would you suggest increasing the brightness / darkness multipliers, or cranking up the hdri multiplier?

i will try mussing up the geometry a bit too. i've noticed how chamfered edges can really enhance realism.

finally, the edges on the art were done intentionally, but you are right - they shouldn't appear to be straight extrusions. i had just been too lazy to map each edge separately.

                  you guys are sharp! thanks!

i d loose the hdr (but that s just me),
use vraysky+vraysun and increase the exposure a bit in ur vray camera!

i haven't started using vray 1.5 yet, so that'll have to wait. i'm waiting for the final release before switching. sounds promising though...
