  • Sun study tests

    These are a couple of tests I did using the new stuff in 1.5. I only spent about 30-45 minutes converting the files to 1.5 and setting up new lights, cameras and setting up the animation. Lighting and rendering settings could be much better, but these were just test for fun done during my lunch hour.

    I had all sorts of nasty problems with the reflection of the sun. I tikered with the materials a bit, but had no success.

    Are the reflection lines fixed with sub pixel mapping?

    What was the per frame render time average?

        That looks very nice, except for those wierd spots

        You might try vlado's dof trick frpm this thread http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...t=negative+dof can't remember the render hit but I don't think it was too bad.

          I think the white bits might be an AA issue.. (from memory)
          Try change AA type or filter.. or even no filter at all.

              Vlado is it meant to be reflecting that way?
              Or is it somewhat of a bug?

              It in no way seems normal to me and moving the sun or setting it to invisible doesnt seem like much of a permanent fix if you know what I mean.

                It is not a bug and is perfectly correct. But the sun is just a dot in the sky; chances that a reflection ray will hit it are quite small. However when a ray does hit it, it produces a bright dot in the image due to the sun being so bright. This is why you get the whole issue. The only solution is to either use impractically large number of image samples, or to make the sun invisible.

                  The other thing is the AA filter will produce that black edge around the sun since the sun measures a super bright number and the edge does not, and most AA filters like catmull, and mitchel, are sharpening filter. So the edge ends up being a negative number in float.... Use some none sharpening filters like Soften, or some of the new Vray ones. This also happens with HDRs that I have been playing with that have values near the sun of 1 billion. This will not get rid of the aliasing, but will remove that black edge.

                    What was the total time of render for this animation? Was it rendered on one computer or was it through a network?

                      Wow! Changing the AA filter did the trick. I used Mitchell-Netravali for the animation. As cpnichols mentioned, that one and Catmull-Rom produced terrible results. Area or none worked well.

                      Sub-pixel mapping didn't seem to have an affect using Mitchell-Netravali filter. Didn't try it with other filter.

                      The average render time was about 8 minutes. The whole sequence rendered on four machines in about 15 hours.

                        the problem is that most of the sharpening filters have negative values in the filtercurve. And that introduces those black borders afaik.

                          LOOKS GREAT!

                          Anyone put together or know of any tutorials that describe how to and/or the best way to do the time lapse sun and environment?

                            all you need to do is link a vray sun to a max sun with compas and animate the time of day
