It much simplier to turn filter off, and then use post in ps (once again - filter called FocusMagic)
Isn't it the same as catmul-rom ? (I took your non filtered variant and used FocusMagic)

I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Or render it again without any AA-filter. But double the output size.

Then make a batch rescale in PS. After scaling down to 50% those sharp "saw-edges" should be smooth(er).

Is the AA issue on the highlights due to clamp output being off? Any other way to fix it? Ive got the same thing going on.

i get some weird refraction caustic bright spots caused by the sun...well its not really a spot...it looks like caustics but it is not quite good cos it is round and it really looks like sun caustics refraction just a bit distorted.....is there any way how to fix that? switching non photon caustics off gets rid of the problem, but i want to have some caustics refraction there.....imagine a carport with wooden frame and refractive plastic sheets on top....the sun comes through and causes what i described above...¨

is that due to the IRR/LC? shoud i switch to something else?
            here is how it looks:

            cheers for any help

Sorry, I'm a DEE DEE DEE

Inexperienced at using Max's sunlight and compass, so sorry for all the questions. So I need to set up a Max sunlight or daylight system and then replace the actual light with a linked Vray Sun? Does it matter if it is sunlight or daylight?

              Thanks again,

                kvmaster:
                Needs to be daylight.
Then align a vraysun to the daylight "light" and the vraysun target to the compass, then link the vraysun to the daylight and select teh daylight and turn off sunlight AND skylight.

THat way your just using the daylight system for the animation.

                Martin:
I think your going to need more hsph on your IRmap , try it out and post results. (also its 5am and im stuff, so i could be WAY of the ball on this one)

Martin - I have had simular problems with ext shadows using a lc that is too small I fixed it by using higher LC (or its also went away with qmc in the second bounce) .

Cool, Thanks! Forgot to turn off skylight and things kept crashing. Do you also use a VRaysky for the environment? Does it also need to be linked to the daylight system?

***edit*** helps to keep reading the Vray manual, noticed it says that The VRaySky changes its appearance based on the position of the VRaySun.

                    Thanks again,

cheers for the hint guys, i am currently waiting for the render, it looks like it might help i am rendering a frame at 1753*1240.

ive set lc to 3000subdivs now and hsph subdivs at 70...¨

hopefully the result will be clean...if not how high do i have to go with lc subdivs?

..nope......it did not go away...) even LC at 3000 subdivs produces this sort of stuff

does that mean that IRR/LC method has some issues with vray sun?

hmmm ok, try changing AA filters and maybe even turn them off.

As a test, try turning off any bump or reflection on the affect materials and render again without changing anything else. (just use region render to save time)

Here is the tower scene setup. I have a greebled box standing in for the tower. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't spend much time tweaking the render settings. I used the default irmap+qmc with the preset medium-animation setting.

I have a separate VRaySky map for the background and environment. That way I can boost the background multiplier to suit my taste. I think I've got it bumped up to 4. The environment multiplier is set at 1.

The scene is set up using linear color mapping, but I've been getting nice results with exponential too. I just have to adjust the background sky multiplier if I use exponential.
