  • Lighting Interior Bar Scene - Suggestions Please!!

    Hi All,

    I am a brand new Vray user and this is my first scene. I am not at all pleased with the lighting, and the image does not look photorealistic at all:

    This scene is lit by using white vray lights in the windows, a direct light as the sun, and two ADDITIONAL vray lights pointing from the window angled upward toward the cieling. All of the lights above the bar are photometric IES lights (placed right inside the cones themselves). The additional lights you see hanging from the cieling are NOT on.

    Essentially, the main problem I have been encountering while making this scene is the black cieling rafters / ventilators. I know that the color of your walls can affect the way light bounces around, and the black ceiling does not allow light to be bounced well. This is why I added two additional Vray lights, otherwise the cieling would be too dark. (See:

    I also do not like the way the sunlight shining throught the window has very clean - cut defined borders. I also think there is too much of a glare when the sunlight hits the bar itself (probably due to the higher refl. glossiness of the bar counter). Should I use a spherical vray light for the sun instead?

    Whether it be on materials, lighting, or modeling, I could really use some criticism / feedback on how to make the image look more realistic. I understand basic Vray language / settings, so don't feel like you need to word your posts carefully

    First, for drafts, I would start by setting everything back to default except your adaptive QMC AA and IR map at Low.

    You currently have your Global subdivs multiplier at 16, and your IR Hsph subdivs of 30, which means you have an effective 480 Hsph subdivs which is why your render time was so long.

    To get more light into the space from the sunlight outside, try putting Vray planar lights in front of the windows with Skylight portal enabled. If that doesn't get enough light inside, increase the interior light sources. That combined with LWF or color mapping should brighten up the space significantly.

    Also, try upgrading to 1.5 and use they Vray physical camera to control exposure.

        Oh, I forgot about your shadow question. If you are using a standard max light for sun, you want to enable the area shadows under the vray shadows parameters rollout. Adjust the area size until the shadow edge blurs as desired.

        If you use a vray sphere light for sun, just adjust the sphere size for controling area shadow.
