  • House Render

    hi
here is a project we've been working. taken a while, but almost there. have added some plants in since these renders, and working on some details. just wanted to get impressions on the lighting.
oh, and there is a gaping hole in the mesh by the driveway. booleans have been wreaking havoc on the mesh. have had to redraw a lot of polyogons..

    everything is pretty standard.
the light is a max sun (direct light) . multiplier 1. colour mapping linear - unchanged. sky multiplier 1 and light blue. (surprisingly i didn't change any of these- the grass looks a little darker with the displacement on now)

played around with the position of the sun quite a lot. rendered sequences at different times of the day.
still using 1.47.03 waiting to make the jump to 1.5 . vray sun looks cool. but the camera controls and sun sound like they might take some getting used to. i guess old methods of workflow will still be usable on the new version, it just has new features?

the next images show a problem i've been having with displacement maps. they displace in wierd directions on some parts oft the geometry, and make noise. so just using non-displaced roof. i just rendered one without displacement or map, and there is still noise on that piece. not sure why.. ?

    Couple of things.

I think your grass is way too saturated. Just PS the image a little to fix that.

And there seems to be some major tiling problems on the grass, the driveway and the roof. But I guess depending on the angles that might not be so much of a problem.
Plus your roof tiles are running wrongly. They all run the one direction instead of downwards from the peak.

    Getting there tho

      hi DaForce
yeah, still haven't really gotten the hang of using photoshop for post. sometimes i brighten or darken images, and use levels, but i haven't really spent time getting used to it. also prints vary from the screen (also depending on what type of printer it's printed on) so i find it kind of difficult..

yeah, roof tiling is off- only have a box UVW map modifier, so it's running in one direction at the moment.

yeah, getting there. will post images when it's completed..

        Image > adjust> replace color
If my memory serves me correct.
Select green part with the eye dropper. Then use the additive eye dropper to select the rest of the green parts..Desaturate, darken, lighten, whatever.

Theres more ways than one im sure

Yeah I was actually suggesting you lower the saturation on the texture itself before rendering, not afterwards in PS.

alternatively you could edit the output levels of the texture so it isnt so dark. I have the same issue...when you add displacement it makes the grass darker.

In terms of the model, you may need some ridge capping and plug the holes. otherwise looks quite good.

I think the most improvement will come in post. Your images look similar to mine when rendered so what i usually do it change the exposure to 0.8 (in CS2 only) to lighten some shadowed areas, then increase brightness and contrast by about 10-15. from there i usually play with hue and saturation if anything stands out too much.

Your images look very low-resolution as well. I know they are tests but you should get used to working at a higher resolution if you have the CPU power

i've eventually done some more on this project. was planning to do some in December, but rest and relaxation was due and enjoyed hope you all had a great one as well.
been pretty busy last few weeks.. basically gone over the budget, timewise, - gave a higher budget initially... they are good clients, and we do a lot of work with them, and i like their work, so this is kind of like a gift to them. also it's an interesting house, and i wasn't completely happy with the way it was looking. i like it now, but still some issues with levels, ...
is there a way to do an S-curve/levels on PhotoShop 7? i will read up more(and watch some of the Gnomon video tutorials from Chris Nichols) on linear work space etc. later or this evening. still confuses me a bit. think i'm understanding the basic concepts.

the roof displacement could be better.
someone posted a map for roof tile displacement on this forum, and it looked great on their renders, but i can't find it again. does anyone know where i can find this?

i like the way the close views on the deck are looking now. think it's quite a major improvement from earlier renders...

              here are the renders:

some additional info: for the final renders (print resolution) max was crashing. i read the vray help on troubleshooing, then ctrl+alt+del'd to view the task manager to see if it was a memory issue (i'm only using 2Gb Ram, time to upgrade) so it went up to about 1.9Gb, then crashed. so i rendered off saved light cache and irradiance maps, and had to turn off the render window. it then rendered ok at the large resolution.

              c & c welcome.

still have the same sky, need to go do some more photography. ridge capping still absent. haven't got CS2 yet..
thanks for the comments and advice. getting there.

looking forward to doing some interiors..

A nice improvement over the first post!!

As for the S-Curve, I havnt used PS7 in awhile, but your render doesnt strike me as one needing the S-Curve, as it has good enough contrast. But all you need to do is: Image -> Adjustments -> Curves Then add 2 points, and move them to make a faint S, im sure you have seen the pictures I have posted showing roughly how it looks.
But thats mainly usefully for low contrast/gray images.

The only thing that still strikes me about your images, is that they are still just a tad too saturated... and well the sky.. but you know that
Roof still looks weird as well.. too flat.

please change the sky, it will be probably the easiest thing to do and will positively affect 20-50% of each image )

try http://www.mayang.com/textures/Natur...uds/index.html for some free sky's/clouds images

                  Rgds,
