  • Old Gas Station

    hello,
just putting the finishing touches on this scene. i had alot more detail type things in mind to add, but things are getting busy again and i think this is all i can do. my main focus was textures, particulary the peeled paint look of the front wall. i'll render a few more shots (including some night shots) and probably post them tomorrow.
    comments welcome.
    thanks

Wow Joe I love this. Nice job with the texturing especially all the rust. The gravel is a bit uniform, maybe break it up with some displacement. Is that blood on the garage door? Freaky!

I think it looks great but not totally photorealistic - I think the scale of some of the details in the textures are a bit too big so it makes it look slightly cartoonish. Also the damaged areas like the paint chips or plaster cracks seem to simple or clean - take the paint chips. It looks like it was two different layers with a brush revealing through, there aren't enough levels of breakup in it. Also on the plaster areas where there's cracks revealing the underneath brick, there's a really sharp transition between the plaster and brick. If this was the case and it was left to weather for a while would there be bits of dirt collecting around the edges where the plaster starts? Would the edges of the plaster have its paint exposed so rain could get underneath it which might make the paint at the exposed edges of the plaster start to get worn / blister / discolour? Likewise something like the garage door should probably have some grime underneath the bottom of the windows where rainwater wouldn't wash away dirt as much. Likewise the opposite effect where the bottom edges of objects that meet the ground or a flat surface such as the concrete island for the pumps meeting the ground. Dirt would probably gather around the bottom of this from being splashed up with rain water or gather by being blown by the wind.

It looks really good and you've got your technique down very well though - the sepia version looks great!

        thanks guys.
lots of good points john. i agree, i think there is alot i could do to improve the textures. i was planning to make an opacity map for the peeled paint object (created with poly modeling) which in theory would add alot of detail to the edges of the holes in the plaster. i think this would help the transition fom plaster to plaster to brick. i don't think there really is a right or wrong answer as far as the scale of the plaster however. i did realize early on that getting to photoreal was going to be tricky. i had a ton of detail in my head for this and just dont have the time to get there.
so i'll settle for some stylized artwork...which shud still look nice when printed.

Absolutely - I think maybe toning down the bump mapping / displacement would make the weathering a lot less pronounced and lend itself to the scale of the scene better - I did a similar scene a while back for an ad and I found it difficult to make the same calls! Either way its still a great scene and the range of colour / contrast is fantastic.

looks great, I would add some litter (empty oil cans, etc) and weeds/plants to the scene especially around the base of the island.

2nd sepia version is my favorite

              Excellent work

Excellent work, from a Production Design point of view my only critic would be to take out some of the props. I think a little negative space would work wonders. Everything else is top notch - great job.

Really nice...............although the Texaco signs could use some weathering to match the rest of the scene.

                  Good work.

                    very nice!
the caution "strips"(?).... well might need some extra attention compared to every other object in the scene...they look way too rigid!

everything else as been pointed....i like it nevertheless!
                    good work!

thanks for the comments everyone. i'm currently trying to render a night scene but its not looking too good. as mentioned earlier, the wall texture is coming out a bit cartoony. i think i can get away with it in the day shots when its under shadow from the canopy. but when viewed under direct light (fluorescent lights under canopy) it looks wierd. i definately need to tweak it.

Awesome. I prefer the b+w versions though for some reason. The images look like something out of Deliverance or Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
