  • Lexus Hdri/Backplate Comp

    Hello all!

    I've been using vray for quite a while now and been lurking on the forums for even longer So i thought it was about time I started to post a bit more.

    Anyway, not sure if this is the right place for work in progress so please move it if it isn't.

    I've been working on some Hdri+Backplate rendering, courtesy of cgibackgrounds.com and thought i'd post up where i'm at and see if you guys have any words of wisdom

    The car is CAD data and it's a straight render out of max. I've only just set the scene up so this is only the second render i've had out of it.

    Still need to put the interior in and tweak the materials and the comping.

    Any advice would be great,

    Cheers, Shoey

    looks great. Just so I understand, you didn't model the background or the car? You basically textured the car, setup up a camera, threw in the hdr and hit render? If so, thats a testament to vray's ability to create nice imagery with little effort.

    That's not a zing on you btw.

        You could almost post this scene with the backplate and car model as a zip file and let people tweak the vray settings and post the resulting image to see who can get the best image out of vray with the same scene. The downside is that its not a very exciting scene to do such a thing with. No offence intended, i like the image. I would brighten it up though.

          so, with cgibackgrounds.com, you can buy a background plate and the supporting HDRI?

          Is that right or am i way off?

          If that's true that's an amazing site! I'd love to buy some of those industry plates, but does the industry plate come as a HDR image?

          <nice render btw>

            The images at cgibackgrounds aren't loyalty free, so depending on use and time, they cost differing amounts, but yes, you can get a backplate with either an exact matching Hdri or one that is pretty similar. The idea being that a car manufacturer wants to display a concept car, or an idealistic impression of a car, that looks as real as possible.

            This whole piece is just a learning experiment for me. I've not done a lot of photoreal comping, if any, and wanted to see how far i could push the lighting and materials, without having to worry about modelling.

            I just want to learn as much about the lighting and materials as i can. I know its not the most interesting image in the world, but it serves a purpose.

            Hence the reason I posted it, i wanted some feedback on materials and some advice on how to make it look more photoreal

              the concept behind the website is interesting tho, buy yourself a spheron cam, lug it around the world to some good locations, take some shots, and make money from that. good way to see the world...hehe

                @shoey: Nice rendering!

                Little post work in Photoshop could increase realism, too. This is what I have reached in PS so far (hope you don't mind):

                This is what I have done:
                - sharpening
                - S-curve (more contrast)
                - adding slight reflection to the floor

                  I'd do the oposite....make a DOF effect ( background) to focus on the Car because your background is grey and the car silver.

                    Hm - but DOF is not very "realistic" in this situation is it?
                    It would make the car look like a very small toy car.

                      depending how stong is the DOF effect...I paid more attention on the building than the car, because it's not a common building....it's difficult to say what it is then your brain tryes to figurate out and find a reference for that s so the car becomes the secondary object....your attention usually goes to objects that pop up by contrast but this is not the case.

                        Yes, you are right.
                        But then it might be better to place the car closer to the cam. If there is more space between car and building then between car and cam the DOF effect would be more realistic I think.

                          Quite like the reflection you put on the floor, might have a go with that.

                          In the meantime, got a new car to play with.

                          What do you think of this one?

                            Looks well but composition wise it's quite noisy to look at - there's no central point that your eye is being drawn too - the render is fine, it's a bit of framing that'll make it more like a sexy photo of a car. I think the background is a tough one to work with since it's a bit all over the place and the tones are the same as your car so you're not getting much separation.

                              nice image, but as joconnell says, lack of central point. Love the car
