  • Old church model, small addition, new environment

A year a go i've done a model of this church for another location. Here it is on a different location, with the base added.

The cross is green because of the reflections, it definitely looks weird and i should look up a reference for this. I'm not so sure about the scale... i'd say that this is pretty much what it's supposed to look like. The previous one also looked small, but with an entourage around you would have some sense of scale.

I think it's the nature of the building, the proportions, maybe the angle, that makes it look small. The building underneath the church, is much much smaller than the 3d church.

I don't know if it's the building design or not, but to me the scales are off in a few places (grass to trees to building) so I think there may be something going on with the size too. How many pieces were comped to make the background plate?

This is the plate i used. I also had another photo from the same point but it is vertical, i used that for the trees and the sky that i was missing when i extended and cropped the original one.

I traced the vanishing points of the original building, and i used one of the building corners for reference as i knew that it was roughly 8' high. From that point i moved the church some 30'.

I'm not sure if i traced the vanishing point right since it ended up being lower than the horizon, it may be that the bottom most edge of the church wouldn't be so level, so horizontal, it maybe that it would be in slight perspective.

If this seems logical, then that must be the problem.

I think the building is a bit too big, and maybe just a bit too much tilt on your camera - but the larger thing might be the tree on the right. It should be in front of the church. Having it go behind the building makes the building appear to be in the foreground in one part, and in the background in another. That is probably where the scale thing is getting odd.

Thats probably it, both these trees should infact be in front of the church... ill see if i can somehow move the canopy a bit away from the church and then clip it so it's actually showing in front of it. I just don't want too much to be occluded.

                    Hi
I agree about the scale comments above- apart from that your lighting fits very nice - I think it is good work.

Forgot to post the other one. This were done in a haste and i ddon't really have the time now to fix it so please don't mind the horrible retouching on the far right.

Scale, lighting, blending? How does it work for you?

Have to admit, while i kinda liked the first one, this one definitely feels odd. But still, the way i've done it seemed proper.

                        Great work pailhead.

I really like your brick and metal roof textures. They look nice and fit well withing environment.
What I don't like is how the stone blocks wrap around corners. It looks kind of accidental. The other thing that might improve your rendering is to choose tighter crop. Cut 2/3 of grass from the bottom and some of the stuff behaind the church.
