      • All of the scattered proxy images over the last couple of months have been great. After years of compulsively conserving polygons, scattering about million-polygon plants with reckless abandon is just so decadent and the results are often gorgeous.

        I spent a lot of time looking into the different programs and ended up going with Itoo's Tree Pro, mostly because it has very flexible scattering options and it allows for scattering several objects at once. This was an important factor for me. The new version, still in beta, scatters VRay proxies directly and generates the actual proxies at render time so you can quickly work with large numbers of proxies. (I haven't tried millions of proxies with any of the apps) You also have the option to hand-edit the scattering result to add or remove individual elements. All in all a good balanced solution. I am not sure how the it would compare to VRay Scatter when working with millions of proxies.

              • I'm looking forward to playing with 2.5, but it will have to wait a week or so.

                Here's my last test for a while. This is a wider view, about 2,000,000 proxies - give or take. This is a new set of cut grass for a more uniform look. They are mapped to the same basic plane, but I toned down the noise modifier to smooth it out. Still needs a few more of the little plants/weeds that some of you guys are using, but I'm happy overall with the geometry. I think my only real beef is that it lacks enough colour variation along the length of each blade, which makes it looks a bit more fake/flat. In this one I created some more variation in Pshop and it helped IMO.

                3500X2000 - same settings except this time I did the DOF in post. Rendered in about 1:45

                • Oh god look at the regular noise!



                  Will play further on the weekend (I know I said that last time but what else am I meant to do during my lunch break - eat lunch?)

                  Also, 52mins on a dual XEON 2.8ghz, 8gb ram, win64. Was doing other stuff including rendering at the same time though, and much of the time was spent calculating the IR map.

                  • I tryed as well to use it on a large plane (100m x 100m) and I am very impressed by vray scatter. I used the same grass of the previous test.
                    Rendering time was around 40min at 2048px with 3 q6600
                    (I just tried vrayscatter 2.5 but got lot of crashes so for now I went back to 2.0)

                      • on the lc calculation when going over 1024px, the same scene without any change works like a charme on 2.0 even on 3000px

                              nice to see development continuing on vrayscatter, think i'll wait for the final release of 2.5 though!
