  • Car Crunch

This is one we did for fun/portfolio.

The car model is from GM (we had it here for a different project) which we broke up in Max/Zbrush. The wrecking ball and chain we did here. Lots of post work to add more detail and grunge, and final feel. Background was purchased from Suurland's collection. Original render was about 5K wide.

It's one of those projects where we could have spent a year adding more and more detail but I was pretty happy with the final product at this stage.

    C&C very welcome.

well done. You can tell it was a new car crunched by the ball.

        wow nice!
        animation!!!
you've done sort of simulations for it? or its modelled by hand?

good job but I suppose that the glass of lights should explodes when hitted by that ball.

I suppose that the glass of lights doesn't need to resist to impacts like the windscreen for security.

This is the only thing I've noted immediately.

            Thanks Andro and Bobby!

Jonas: thanks man. No animation done or coming though: I don't really know how. I was having trouble just getting a tire to rotate to make some motion blur for another image No simulations done, just modeled by hand.

Bardo: thanks. I didn't really think about it that way, but I see your point. You can tell I didn't really know which way to go because each headlight is different So the passenger side reads better? (even though the fragments are hard to see on the ground...)

              Hey this is amazing technically!
Only cc from me is the following. (only things to consider, not that anything is wrong here.)
              1. If that ball landed on that car, there might be a lot more debris on the ground near the car?
              2. If it was a straight fall, there are some damage parts that need explaining, like the door. what dented the door side so much?
              3. Add some engine coolant to the puddles on the ground

I feel bad even mentioning these, as obviously this is incredible! Like you said, you could have spent a year fussing...
Texturing, lighting, details, etc. are excellent. I couldn't come close, so take these with a grain of salt, please. (Just trying to be contructive, not critical.)

Haha that was the first thing I saw too, but what a wonderful image! Windshields of course have a "safety" coating which in most cases holds them together, the headlights on the other hand usually do not unless it is an aftermarket addon/fix, like you would put on to prevent rock chips.

I like the little green goo on the wrecking ball (which I suppose is antifreeze), that gave me a good chuckle for some reason

                Great work!

I could actually imagine the door being forced open and going all the way forward and returning, since the weight did appear to crush and distort the frame as well as the passenger cabin.

I agree with Voltron, there are some CC's that might be mentioning like more parts and coolants on the floor, like u said you can spend years putting this detail, however the image is great as is.

Thanks Voltron7 - pls don't apologize for critiques, that is why I posted it. If I didn't want opinions I wouldn't solicit them, and if I just wanted to be told how nice a pic it is I'd have shown my mother instead .

                    Thanks also pskdude and jrandom.

I agree that the headlight needs some love. I'll re-render that part and will add more broken glass to the ground, and maybe some more splatter of liquids. I have some coolant there already but maybe it needs to be more green to show as different from the oil. Regarding the driver's door: I know it doesn't make much sense the way it's hammered up, but it just looked to clean otherwise, so I took some artistic license to help move the concept across more

Thanks again guys - appreciate the feedback.

Updated the image on page 1 with suggested changes and some tweaks.
                      - replaced headlight
                      - brought up the antifreeze more and added more drips/drabs here and there
                      - shattered glass and more splotches on the ground (didn't have time to render out more parts, I'll have to draw the line for time on that one )
                      - tweaked the treatment/colour overall a bit.

Thanks for the feedback all - I think this is much better.

Thanks for the references bardo. We did dig up quite a few but I don't think we actually found those sites.
