hmmm, it seems to be hard to reproduce now....damn it...come to think of it, it may have only happened back in 1.09.03g....m using i now.

      notoiara:
i think i may have worked it out. in the properties rollout of your light, in the vray shadow params part, try turning off smooth surface shadows if you have it on....or on if you have it off.

      does that make a difference?

      EDIT
ok i have tried everything to reproduce it now...and i cant do it...but i have definitly seem it before...if i come across it i will post here.

It looks like unwanted smoothing / autosmothing to me too, try removing it (the smoothing)

its not a smoothing group issue as far as i am aware. I would call it an oddity.

As if it was a smooth problem then when he converted the model back to editable mesh the problem would stay, but infact it goes away.

So the problem only exists when his model is an editable poly. I too have experience problems like this before, but i am now unable to recreate it, i think it may have been a problem with 1.09.03g i am now using 1.09.03i

Vray has got some problems with Polyobjects.

For Example: you create and box, turn it into Poly and then apply a smoothing to a single face which is high then 90 degrees. You want see that in viewport or in the scanliner. But if you apply an editmesh modifier you can see, how max trys to smooth the invisible line. It seams like this is bug they have corrected in the scanliner but, Vray is not based on polymesh, it needs triangles and Max seams to give Vray this wrong information.

So fix it by appling an edit mesh modifier to you object or delete all smoothing groups in you poly object. Sometimes it helps to apply a smooth-modifier but not always.

Yep, I think that is a bug. But I dont know if is in some versions.
I just test that 3d Studio Max 4.2+Vray 1.08.03f it works good.

But in 3D studio Max 5.1+Vray 1.09.02u it works bad. If someone wanna test I put here a scene that it views like this image :

well, it seems to work fine here, so i can only assume its a problem earlier versions of vray. I would suggest updating. i think it was a problem from G backwards.
