thanks guys.after i deleted the diffuse layer still it looks really white and not much different.
i used the rosette.jpg for the bottom of the stone as reflection HDRI map which travis told me but it doesnt' work.
overall the stone doesn't look clear and looks white.
why is that??? should i change the background color???
i used rosette.hdr not the jpeg i posted. search google for rosette hdr and you will find it. I also had a couple spot lights for direct lighting the diamonds. This helped bring the white out in them.
Nice and simple. I noticed that you did the animation with the built in tools with Rhino (not bongo). Did you do just render it out frame by frame (brute force), or did you go through an pre calculate an IR map? I did a tutorial for doing animations with the animation tools, but haven't released because of some issues with the old vfr3. I think its now time to give it to the masses.
i did 4 pre-renders with incremental add to map. Then when ready for the full 300 frames saved that incremental map and loaded it up. I turned off the secondary engine. So each frame bucketed in about 30 seconds on average. I was really after speed over quality with this test, but overall i was really impressed by the quality of just IR map and relatively low settings for the IR map at that.
But you know me - here two ideas:
- You must create an object VR movie of it so that the user can move it around per mouse !!!
- The lighting is so colorless, so that the image look like a combination of a b&w image with colored stones. I'm not a friend of grey shadows. Some times it help to add light warm look per postwork (f.ex. light warm fotofilter).
Heh yes i too am a fan of colored light, but in jewelry we strive for absolute colorless light, so that nothing changes the natural color of the stones. We are 100% diffused white =) which makes rendering easy as can be lol.
Yes, thats a great idea, i want a VR movie myself i'll give that a shot next
attach a photo of a diamond to the environment map slot. I would like for this map to be on the diamond material Background channel, but for some reason refractive materials render black when you attach a map right now. Joe is working on it.

Import the clear glass material from your vray stock materials
Change the IOR to 2.417 and make sure Double Sided is selected in the material options.
Note
if you attach a photo of a diamond to the Scene back ground channel then all of your metals and your ground plane will reflect that map. You should then attach your back ground map for your metals to the metal material.
I have a new problem. When I dont have the diamonds in metal they look good. I am using the boolean difference for removing metal underneath the stones but the diamonds are looking too dark when they are set in metal. What do you do?
