  • photo montage - real project

I do a lot of small scale domestic work and the sketchup photo matching tool really came in useful. Now I'm using vray its even better!
The attached photo montage is for a two storey side extension. The only post rendering work was to put the window reflections in - copied from the nearby 'real' window. I also adjusted the colour balance to match the existing photo better.

Nice work! At first glance i was wondering what was 3D but after looking closer the CG part is a bit clean - but the composition is really great!

You could tone down the reflection a bit and add som texture to the walls and garagedoors.

      Otherwise great work!

Did you see my photomontage i posted today? Please feel free to drop a line.

It looks really good, and its matched very well. However the lighting is somewhat flat on the addition. If you had an hdri of a similar scene it would be extremely useful for balancing the lighting of the cg to the image. It would also prevent you from having to add the reflections in photoshop. Secondly I think the cg side needs a bit more texture. The roof is a big give away because the shingles are so flat. Because of the camera angle it would probably be a better tool for displacement the bump maps. The bricks need a little more something too. The matching: camera angle, location, lens length, and white balancing are all very excellent.

I saw, and was blown away by (pardon the pun!), your trumpet and violin image. The lighting, texture and DOF where just amazing. In fact after seeing your image I nearly didn't post mine as you are clearly in a different league. I would like to ask you about the hdr image you used in the scene. Where is it placed. Is it positioned in the scene or is it in one of the many vray settings?
Also your interiors are really nice, especially the lighting effects and sparkle.

I agree about the flat lighting, but I don't know how to use hdr images yet. If you can point me at a tutorial that would be most welcome. I also agree about the lack of bump mapping in the textures. This always shows up on a roof because of the angle. I must learn how to do bumps to!

Hdrs are actually really simple, they just sound complicated. Basically its just like mapping a bitmap, but at the top of the texture editor is an option for enivronment. Check that and you get some options on the right. In order of most to least common the types are spherical, mirror ball, cubic and angular. Just put a chrome sphere in the your scene and try each of the types till it looks right. Then adjust the intensity based on what you need (in the texture multiplier, not the multiplier in the options page). There are a number of threads that will point you to some free hdrs, and you can always search google too. Try it out and see if you can make it work for you.

I took your advice folks, garage doors modelled (maybe a bit too much, but I created a new component so it will be easy to tone down), also got reflections into the glass texture (maybe too bright). I kept getting the reflected image in negative, and it took several tries before I realised I needed to 'invert' the image.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice, I just need to sort out bump maps now!
