  • Ocean scene

    Hi all,

An experiment on water and light.
I used default sky and 'blended' a sky image afterwards in Pshop (using the alpha channel that is saved with the .png image).
One of the sails has an inverted face.

    A question:
The water is a vraylinked material. It renders with bump map. All ok.
During editing workflow on the model, however, I felt the need to rescale the entire model. Since I had to re-map some textures including the water material, I deleted the vraylinked material and linked it again (from the new made water SU material). However, this time, it doesn't work anymore and bump map doesn't show on the renderings.

Is 'vraylinking' of materials a 'one time' thing only?
How can I re-link a SU material that has been edited (=new texture and remapped in SU)?

Thanks in advance.Help on this is very much appreciated.

This is the image I had before my issue came up.

    Another issue that came up:

Sometimes the sun position seems to change 'randomly' when re-rendering a scene, even though the settings were untouched. Bug?

        Biebel,

youe have those hands and eyes that really can see beauty, no matter what rendering software you are using. this is really great image. i have also the same question with materials. Its all about changing the already applied material wit new material.

Oh my God! What a beauty!!! I hope I could be able to replicate your talent even just 1/8 of it. Great intricate design & render.

            Thanks guys,
            much appreciated! ;D

And indeed Nomer, I still don't know what to do once I decide to change a SU material that is already linked. I hope Asgvis team could clarify.

I actually had to revert to a precious saved file to be able to render the next 'claire-obscure' shot :-[
The bump map came out better than I hoped, showing nice speculars....very powerful Vray feature !!

                  Re: Ocean scene

The linked material you had an issue with - did it have the same name as the previous one you deleted? Was there anything else you changed between the linked material that did work and the one that wouldn't show the bump map?

Also - if you have any scenes that you can disclose that illustrate the linked mat issue I'd be interested to see them. I understand if you can't share them though.

                  Thanks
                  Best regards,

                    Yes

I'll describe what I did in steps:
I linked the SU material (water) for the first time and assigned a bump map to it. This bump texture has the same size as the diffuse (SU) texture so the UV-settings match.
At this moment, Vray renders the material well including a nice 'wavy' bump.

Later on I scaled the whole model (X2). Bump suddenly was gone in the output.
I thought the scaling caused it so I decided to delete the vraylinked material.
I remapped the existing SU material (just loaded the texture again in SU material editor and changed its size ). Than I tried to link the SU material again (still having the same material name), hoping the new assigned texture and uv info would be transferred so I could assign the bump map again.

However, bump doesn't show up and the uv didn't transfer...

I would love to share the 77 MB SU file using yousendit. However, the sailing ship is a commercial model so I don't think I can share it .

I have no problems setting up materials for the first time in VfSU by making vraylinkedmats. However, from the moment I decide to change something to the SU materials after they are 'linked'(for instance rescaling the texture or use a different texture bitmap),I don't know what to do anymore...
It seems that deleting the first linked mat and re-linking again does not work.

Maybe introducing a 'update linked materials ' button in the Vray material editor would solve the whole thing. Such a button could just re-read all the info present in the SU materials that are linked, so we don't have to repeat the 'linking' process after every little change we make to a material in SU. Just an idea....

Joe, thank you very much for looking in to this.
I think if this would be fixed, Vray would work like a charm and all powers can be unleashed in an acceptable workflow.

                    Regards,
                    Biebel

                      Re: Ocean scene

This scene is amazing, truely inspirational!

Would it be inappropriate to ask for a share of the water material? Or maybe a (brief) tutorial on how it is made? I am attempting to make an ocean scene and can't get the water right no matter what I try!

Also, how do you get you sky sucha rich and clear blue, mine is always fuzzy and a bit washed out?

Cheers and thanks again for posting such a scene!

simply fantastic model and render looks great.

I use that canvas texture for a lot of my ground planes. It's very cool to see it sailing away. :P

                        great work!

                          Thanks Travis,

That canvas texture is a nice 'do it all' texture. It's even good for jewellery back grounds. ;D
Nice jewellery renderings you made (Rhino gallery) mate !

                            Re: Ocean scene

I just thought of a use for that canvas texture, inspired by Travis's ground plane use.

Is it freely available, I can't see it in the Downloads section of this site?
