  • Screws

Hey, this my first post here. I'm just starting figure out VRay and 3D design in general, so I'm doing a lot of testing. I'm having a slight problem with a custom material I made for some screws. The material uses a "Scratch" map which basically a free plugin I picked up somewhere. The scratches work fine on simple spheres, but as soon as I apply the material to my screws, they no longer show up. One think I noticed is that in the material editor, the 'Scratch' map is located under 2D maps. Could this be the problem?

The original material on simple spheres:

The same material on the screws (missing scratches):

Help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah because its a 2d map it needs UVW co-ordinates to work, try spherical or cylindrical mapping the screws.

i find it somehow unrealistic... the shadows are too bright, so it seems the screws are floating... and the overall scratching on the screws is spreaded too much, so the thread on the screws has the same amount of speckles and scratches as the heads

have a look at grid's screws in the gallery for reference

Post the render settings. It would be easier to make suggestions about improving the image quality.

        cheers

I can explain why the shadows are too bright in the 2nd scene. Like you said, they look like their floating. Well, they actually are. I acidentally left some of the screws a little elevated and after that I was too lazy too render them again

Ok, here's a new and better version. I got the scratches to work. What else needs improvement?

Two things stand out to me:

              1) The mapping of the scratches on the leftmost foreground screw and the one directly to the left of it seem to be identical.

              2) The scale of the wood planks is far too small. The screws seem to be no more than an inch long, and I would imagine that the boards should be about 6-10 inches wide.

Other than that, very nice. Where'd the wood texture come from?

lol, this is far from being a finished scene. It's just a test scene. I was trying to make a decent material for the screws (which will be used in a different, much larger scene). So never mind the planks

I got the plank textures from http://perso.club-internet.fr/lemog/
That's where I get all my real life textures. The site (it's in French & English) contains over 3000 100% seamless textures. I downloaded them all, lol. Took me 3 days. Anyway, I quite happy with them. I usually mix several of them together. In this case I blended it with a procedural Smoke map to try to hide the tiling (which I think worked more or less).

Though I like these free textures, I'm planning on getting the 3D Total Texture CD's cause I just love how they give you all the pre-made bump-, dirt-, opacitymaps (and more).

Ok, this is what the scene may look like in the end.

I really think that if there are scratches in the screws it is because they are used...so I think you should put some stain in them...rust a little or something...and deform a bit the place for screwdriver would make strength. if they are new...just should make thos scratches slighter
