  • Philco PC : concept PC design

This project was inspired by the 1958 Philco TV and the sad, sorry state of current PC design. By the way, I made an 'easter egg' for V-ray geeks like me. Check out the monitor screen on the first image; its a wireframe of the same scene being rendered in V-Ray.

Looks very nice. I really like the retro look. When I did my Final Major I designed modelled and built a mini computer case based on old '50s - '60s automobiles. It's an era of style which I'm very found of.
Do you got more similar projects?
Is this something you plan to produce?
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

Thanks. I design a wide variety of consumer products, lighting, and furniture. Some of it is 'retro' but I like to try new direction whenever possible. This was intended as a portfolio & marketing piece, so I have no plans to produce it myself. However, I am always open for licensing to interested manufacturers. I already sent out postcard mailers to some clients and the next step is to publicize this design on some of the gadget blogs like www.engadget.com or www.gizmodo.com

If you don't mind me going slightly off topic; how would you approach and where would you go if one has a design one would like to produce?

Love the design and the rendering!

If this goes into production and you were able to fit the specs I want into it, I'd buy it!

Good catch! The 'lens flares / blooms' were all photoshop ... basically a new layer with a white soft brush. Another trick is to use multiple sizes of paint brushes stacked on top of each other. That means the center of the highlight therefore gets much brighter than the outside edges. I usually set the soft brush to 10% opacity and start small, then hit the ] to quickly scale the brush up in size and repeat.

Thanks. If I understand your comment correctly, the screen is definite a 'funky hybrid;' a mixture of CRT-aesthetics with proposed LCD hardware internally. There are some new LCD panels that have non-rectangular perimeters, so that was the inspiration.

If you were saying you don't like it, that's cool too. I tried to respect the original forms, but interpret them with a new fresh-retro look.

Thanks. The final renderings took 45 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the reflections and whether it was on my 2-core of 4-core machine. That does not include the 60 or 70 test renders I did at various stages of the design. That's the key to good renders; testing and tweaking, then repeat.

Design work and modelling ran somewhere around 40 hours. It felt like the keyboard took half of that time, but it was actually around 10 hours for the keyboard & mouse design, modelling, and material design. That's another good tip; the more detail you can model, the better the render will be.

Re: Philco PC : concept PC design

What I meant was the screen would fit more to the case and keyboard if you design it rectangular

Also the part that holds and let screen turn around might be somehow weak because the screen is thick and 2 pipes are thin and seperated

thanks for thanking I need criticism for my works too but because the copyright issues I don't prefer posting industrial designs much on forums
