I've also done a tennisball like thing, and had a hard time to make it look not so bad, so I'd like to see that tutorial.

I made my one the hard way:
1. made a straight line cage spline
2. covert to beziers and adjust to sphere surface
(couldn't make surface CVs in NURBS look good )
3. loft spline with circle
4. boolean out loft from sphere
