  • Freelance Work that could use some crits

    Hi All,

I've been meaning to post some of my freelance work using the new version of Vray for Sketchup. This is my second project (I may follow up with some images from my first project as well). I have been having issues with the new version just like everyone else but I've been finding ways to work around most (not all) of my issues.

At this point I feel comfortable enough using the VfSU to put some work out there for feedback. I would also like to put out there that in trying to be as efficient in my workflow as I can be, I am working toward using NO post-processing in Photoshop. Also, I have been using the new and improved alpha transparency functionality for materials in VfSU, which I am addicted to. Financially, 2D entourage is a more viable option for my people and vegetation--but I am open to alternatives! I am still working on learning the VfSU lighting system (spotlights/IES lights in particular), and am still getting there.

All that said, criticism is more than welcome. I would ask the most of it be geared toward the actual visualization, because we can't always decide what designs are brought to us by our clients This one is a re-purposed warehouse turned in to a patio space for catering events.

A couple of questions to start, why am I still getting some shiny artifacts up top, and how can I get my pendant lights to glow like I think they would (I'm not sure if I'm placing my vray IES light geometry in the right place in my sketchup model to make the glass glow)?. Or do I need to make the glass an emissive material?

    Thanks again

Nice renders, great usage of transparecy maps, my advice would be on your brick walls they look to flat use a bump map.

You know, I totally agree. I made a custom bump map last night, but it isn't working. I have no idea what the problem is. I'm working on that now. I have a full color diffuse map with a black and white bump map (both PNG files), but it doesn't actually seem to be doing anything

I don't get it. I would prefer to avoid using a displacement map, as I have hit the 1.6 GB several times already when rendering (have to use VRimage just for 3000 px wide images).

Are you putting the bumpmap in the right slot? A black and white image should work fine.

In preview window, does the material looks properly bumped?

no, which is why I'm confused. Because based on the settings it seems like it should be working (I think).

It's not the cleanest, but sure:

it's a great work. i like the mood a lot... people seems fine, but making them blend with the render is always hard...
i thinky that you could improve a lot if you add some shadows or play with the burn tool in photoshop to make people look like they´re really there...
you also have two mistakes with the sizes of people, but as i said, it is still a great work

Re: Freelance Work that could use some crits

I fixed a couple of the people images that didn't come all the way down to the ground in some recent test renders. Where those the people mistakes you were talking about? Also, I'm in the process of figuring out how best to blend the people in. It seems like softening the edges would be the thing they need, but I'm trying to find ways to avoid doing it in post--I'm curious if I can play around with softening the edges on the people images before rendering. I think this issue came up with one of Steelers05 renderings and I think someone posted some tips on how to work the people in.

So I have no idea why, but VfSU did not like that bump map. When I previewed the TexBitmap for the bump, it was all gray. So I went back and made another bump map, and it works now.

As you can see the woman has a black halo (very small but noticeable) and that has a lot to do with the standing out as "glued" object. So it goes like this in Photoshop Got to Layer>matting>defringe. than you can put a pixel value to "blend".
