I have been using both Rhino and 3DS Max for several years. Here is a small +/- list for you:
Rhino
+ More accurate (nurbs modelling)
+ excellent 2D program (snapping, grid, curve tools...)
+ Easy to learn
+ Command line (fast to use)
+ Cheap program
+ export/import options
- Vray for Rhino not even close as good as Vray for 3DS Max
- Cannot model polygons (well there is of course T-Splines...)
3DS Max
+ Editable polygon (very easy and creative way to model)
+ Can handle a lot of geometry without crashing
+ Viewport safe frames
+ 2 point perspective in physical camera
+ VrayRT, Vray proxy, Vray scatter etc
+ UVW mapping
- Expensive
Usually I use the both programs at the same time, exporting and importing geometry from one to another. Renderings I do almost every time with 3DS Max.
