I understand it to be similar to this:
In prman there is an option/method called delayed read archive
you basicly write out each instanced object into a single file once and load it at rendertime, when its needed
there is a siggraph paper here:

desicribing how this feature was used to create the gungan army in star wars episode - phantom menace (beginning on page 73)
(placing objects using a particle system where the particles are replaced by appropriate LOD objects at rendertime)
too bad they had to leave out the images of this part due to copyright restrictions.
This technique has major advantages when it comes to memory usage and managability of the scenes.
