Re: Personal projects (Sci-fi and Fantasy)

@ Fernando, Justin and Omar: Thank you for your kind comments.

@ Matthias: I don't know much about EVE online actually. Just did this for the contest. But I'd love to play the game though. There's probbaly a Legion in the Amarr range.
Thanks for the tips on rendering to disk.

@ Teo: Thank you so much for your nice comment and support. The file is about 40 MB.

For those who love numbers, the model has over 100 components and it has almost 2 millions polygons.

All right, I finally finished it. It took me 3 weeks, working a few hours each night. I am like a zombie now, but I think these sleepless nights were worth it.

      Here is the final submission:

You can see the DeviantArt submission here:

      http://browse.deviantart.com/contest...line/#/d30la31

What's next? I will go back to finish my 2 fantasy interiors that I was working on.

I hope you had enjoyed following this thread of the WIP of the Starship as much as I enjoyed working on it. I really appreciate everyone kind comments and support.

Thank you and have a good night (I will be sleeping for the next few days... )

      All the Best,

      _KN

Do you think they will have a problem or hold it against you that there are no real finishes on it. It is just a model...

I mean, I absolutely love it and after browsing the submissions it is definitely my favorite.

            good luck man!

This is CRAZY! Would be cool if you could put up a youtube movie to show how fast you model, it must be insane!

Re: Personal projects (Sci-fi and Fantasy)

@ 40th: Thanks, I am glad you like the renders. I use a regular lighting with AO turned on and overlayed with Sketchup lines.

@ Thanks for your kind words and support, Teo. Oh, and you know, I am a fan of your Vray renders.

@ gallystops: I am glad my entry is your favorite. Well, based on the rules, the colored renders are optional as they mainly required the 6 schematic views to be able to build the 3D model.

I did read the carefully rules and was wondering how to break them without being disqualified. Rules are made to be broken, right? I browse all the other entries and most of them (the best ones) somehow broke the rules. Technically, we added more to the submission. Anyway, I think the most important parts are the 6 views as the colored render is optional. I believe this contest is not about who can have the best render but who can give them what they need to build a starship, which is the schematic line drawing . People at CCP have their own textures and set of colors for each race already. So this is my strategy, if I give them the best line drawing with details in real and accurate dimensions, I will have more chance to get a prize.

My other plan is actually to sell them the model if I win. They want the line drawing to build their model. But why do it when they can actually have the real model. I am guessing, it will take more than 3 weeks (working 4-5 hours a day) for a Maya or Max user to build this kind of detailed model. So they will save time and money if they buy mine. It's a win-win situation. ;D

@ Arre: I think "Crazy" is my middle name. lol ... I will do some videos someday to show the modeling process.

                Have a great day, guys!

How large is this file. How many different components do you have?

@ Justin: The file is about 40 MB and has over 100 components. I use components when I have repetitive objects or symmetrical elements.

@ rattanapon: Thanks for you comment.

@ dkendig: Thanks, Devin. I really appreciate that you dug my work. Honestly, I am the one who should thank you guys for developing Vray for sketchup. My Sketchup renders are good because of the rendering engine. Without Vray, the renders would be kind of flat and uninteresting. So kudos to the ASGVIS team and special thanks to Fernando for all the materials and tutorials. Thumbs up.

                          Regards,

                            EVE Online Contest

The 15 finalists were chosen and I am quite disappointmed with the judging. >

                            I did not even get in! ??? :'( :'(

Lots of people commented and disagreed with the chosen ones.

                            You can see them here:

                            http://news.deviantart.com/article/133308/

Oh, well...it was not a waste of time for me as it was quite a great experience working on my starship and improving my Sketchup modeling skills.

Thanks for all your kind comments and support during the 3 weeks I was working on the Starship.

                            Regards,

I see contest as an oportunity to improvo yourself. i think judging is a hard thing to do, and very subjective.......for me yours was one of the best no doubt. I admire your skills and for me you are allready a winner my friend. Keep inspiring us with your great works!!!!

                              I may not be a judge but i see a #1 here ;D

Re: Personal projects (Sci-fi and Fantasy)

your models made me go out and start searching for other plugins to help me model in SketchUp. Until now the most complex thing I've ever modeled in SketchUp was a Kayak... and it took forever! I plan on remodeling it soon with my new little collection of plugins, and I'm sure it will look 10x better than the old lumpy boat I made by manually drawing edges and faces (YUCK!). So many users on these forums are a fantastic source of inspiration. Some inspire me to learn more about the product we make, others inspire me to learn more about the host applications that our product works with. Cheers!
                                Best regards,
