ummm. the goal is to get a good lookng image for a decent render time. not to get a fast render time. no GI is better than bad GI

            Warning, maya user on board

            Wonderfull renders.
I took 3ds scene into maya and render it with mental ray.
I know I'm a little OT but can you explain me
what kind of light and where is positioned in original scene.
I used final gather and area light with raytraced shadows.
No textures or glossy materials I only tried to
mimic light situation. Not even close, right?
Funny thing is that is the same version of mental ray, ha.
Not to mention problem corners with blotches that
go away only at incredible high settings.
This image took 20 min to render on dual Xeon machine.

I will post about this thread in maya rendering forum,
lots of people will be intersted.
I dont know if I'm allowed to post some of your
images for illustration for people that are not members here?
hopefully we can come together for some sollution

I had 11 min 26 sec's with no tweaking of the original file

                dual athlon
                1.5gb ram
                blah blah blah

bloody cold looking scene imho though

True, i am trying to find the limit in quality for the photon mapping for the first bounce, im pretty sure i am not close, but i think the method has potential, just seeing if i can get it to match up to the irmap renderings.

Here is the fastest irmap rendering i ended up with

my go at it, anyone care to explain why the couch is coming out absolutely hideous? (apply cropped is checked for the leather bitmap)

                    full render:

                    Rendertime: 25m on my computer

                    couch closeup:

                    ir map, medium preset
                    interp samples 40
skylight lit, environment multiplier = 1.7
                    1stMulti = 1.5, 2ndMulti = 1.0
                    HSV Colormapping

"Thanks Steve for use of your render farm"

This image has been rendered on computer Athlon 1700 + (overcloking up to 2400 Mhz 512 DDR 3200 dual) Many thanks GoncaloP for the rendered support through astudio, and also to Russian designers: SALuto, IDDQD, Alex Konst, Karba and other (3dcenter.ru) Thanks all founders VRay and personally Vlado. I think, that joint efforts we can not only Mental Ray to win, but give the God and Renderman. VRay - best fast Renderer, number one! Hi, best regards, Bobeoby. (no post Photoshop)

                                Psy,

Are you using interpolation glossi reflections in the couch? With what subdivisions? and what interpolations?
