  • Two refurbs - Tunnel entrance and substation

With our budget being tight, decided to use Google Earth Pro streetview for the substation base image! Only small elements are V-ray though, Photoshop took up most of the work. The tunnel entrance model is V-ray with usual post-processing.

    Hi Paul
First one looks like it could have been done all in photoshop - which part was vray? Also, why are the trees gone?
Second one you did a super job getting the lighting to match up perfectly, I thought at first it was the photo until I scrolled down. Good job!

Vray is the stair tower with roof overhang. That's it I'm afraid! With regards to the trees, my first revision actually left them intact, but was then instructed to remove them as they were deemed too much of an obstruction during works. I believe three new trees may eventually be incorporated into the scheme.

Thanks! Yeah, it's very quiet round here at the moment. Hope it picks up soon.

Substation client seemed to like last image, so requested a couple more for a different site. Think first image blended in quite well, but struggled with the second due to sunlight only hitting that single facade and everything else pretty much in the shade.

Nice! looks like you've got yourself a specialty!
I like your security fence, I had to double check that it wasn't part of the photo in the first one :P
Good work matching the lighting and materials to the original image. One minor quibble would be somehow your addition looks blurred in the second photo - I would expect the seams in the metal to be more crisp - it looks better in the first image.

I added a sort of over-exposure effect to the sun lit façade on the second image. Shall I upload an image without this blur? Would like an opinion on what looks best as I seek to improve my blending techniques!

Saying that, the image has been reduced from 4000 pixels to 1000 pixels wide, so maybe the blurriness isn't so much an issue on the original image when printed at A1.

Ok, two images below. First it the image without the blurring. Second is blurring but higher res (zoomed in).

Would've been so much easier if other building façades were sunlit!

Well, I think my suggestion in this case would be a photoshop one. I would do the blur a different way - I suggest using a layer copy of just the area you want to give a glow then use an "edge-glow" layer effect and make the layer transparent. This way you get the feel without losing the detail.

Thanks, I'll give that a go in the morning and post the result.
