  • My brothers house

    Hi,

just finished a couple of illustrations of my brothers new house. Its not my design, i was just helping out with the renders. The house has two very different sides, the outer has a very traditional swedish countryhouse-style with its standing red boards and smallish windows, and the inner side is abit more modern with larger windows and horisontal larchboards etc.

The surroundings were diffucult for me. The house is at the top of a long slope, so you see a really long way from there = a lot of modelling... I ended up doing the surrondings very basic and then using vray fog and a bit of dof to make it blend in better. If it was summer I would definetly have done photomontages instead, but november is the ugliest month in sweden so photographing wasnt an option

Ran out of time now, but I will continue to work on these and probably more views of this project for my portfolio, so crits, comments and suggestions are very welcome.

    /Kalle

I think you did a very good job.
If you have time i would crop the render hdri sky and make post production of the sky (according backplate) + vray atmosphere (fog), because the jpg backplates provided by Peter (i think those are of them, no?) are much better for final high res results.

    Best regards.

for the 1st two images I think the combination of the siding and the fact that the windows are reflecting a lot clouds (almost matching the color of the siding), the house looks a little bit washout
maybe changing the glass diffuse color as well as adding a little bump would help you to get more realistic looking, it looks too flat and pale.

        thanks guys!
Ca Portugal - you are right ofcourse, I should have used the backplates. Better resolution and alot easier to set the exposure of the background independent of the rest of the scene... i was just lazy. I like the idea of doing everything in the render (cause Im a bit crap at photoshop) but Ill keep this in mind when I work on the images later.
In this case though the resolution doesnt matter that much I think, because the renders have a slight dof that blurs the sky anyways.

flino - I agree. I usually dont use bump on my windows (lack of time) but i know it can make a big difference - will definetly try it here. The diffuse of the glass is set to pure black now - what would you recommend changing it too? I think the larchboard material could be improved alot as well, to give it that silvery feel. Its feels almost like a diffuse gray now.

or maybe it's too reflective or/and it needs more refraction, it should be a difference in color between the siding and the glass...so get more visual contrast of the facade elements.

a great set, yes, but washed-out overall, and scale of grass seems a bit large...not height, just altogether scale. Modelling and composition look really good, just seem a bit washed.

hello again and thank you both!

voltron - yup, ill try to make them "pop" more when I remake them. Part of the problem is probably what Fernando said, that the materials are too close to one another and that makes it a little flat. Also, my renders are usually pretty gray and boring straight out of vray and then a curve in PS takes care of that, but maybe not enough in this case. This is one of the first projects where I use vray fog as well, and i guess that doesnt help if its vibrant colors and contrast youre after.

Agree about the grass. Especially the long grass in pic 3 and 4 where I just took a small clump of grass and scaled it. (lack of time) (or poor planning) will definetly improve that.
