I am just trying to play the scenario back in my head. Architect calls and asks for a rendering, showing one corner of a house. He wants to see it in all four season (for whatever reason). I tell him that it'll be close to $4,000.00.

50 hours, in one week, just on personal work? And even so, it's not like you're doing that for months is it?
I was trying to point out that personal work, while people do spend a month or so on it in total very rarely ends up taking more actual time than most commercial jobs.Last edited by Neilg; 28-08-2012, 03:38 PM.

Sure. Maybe I'm just really slow, but 50 hours isn't all that much of a work week really - I'd call that low side of typical, so doing that for a personal project or testing is not a big deal in my view.
I've thrown considerably more hours into some weeks, but I could easily put 20 or more hours into personal stuff on top of a normal week.
I'd find that pretty depressing if I'm the only one! - must be a lot slower than I realized

Well, then! send your work to me .
I usually charge what I think is fair, for the project. I charge a little less for small , one man shops, and I'll charge more for larger firms. When I work with larger firms, I have to work with a lot of people, which complicates things. The small shops are easier. I typically don't spend more then 3 days on a project (save your jokes like, "we can tell").Bobby Parker

Where I work we outsource (most of) our hero shots to many different groups and it's always interesting to see the pricing. Some mediocre joints charge from $1500-$3000 AUD per image where some of the best mobs' prices vary wildly between $1200-7000AUD per image. So as you can see some of the better viz companies charge less than the crap ones...

Sometimes, yes but the locals are just greedy. I know the companies and their employees fairly well and I'm amazed what some of them get away with.

Those are not the images I made for Ikea. The images I made for Ikea are different.
And I didn't spend enormous time on those. Yeah I spent time when I could find time from other projects so timeline looks longer.
I can't comment if they look realistic or unrealistic or if they are good or bad. This is probably a relative concept and everyone has different ideas and tastes.for my blog and tutorials:

Well it is strange to hear such judgment on portfolios.
The main reason I like to create personal images is not abundance of time.
But it is that there is no client and you can build your composition as you want.
In most of the cases, clients like to pay for one image and they want to include everything in that image and that is why most arch-vis stuff doesn't look good most of the time. Because the design of the image itself is diseregarded by the client which produce poor results.
Otherwise, my personal images don't take much longer than my commercial ones unless I am trying to explore a new technique or method or software.
On the other hand, for me it is strange to judge images on such time-basis.
What I can produce in 30 hours would be different from what a newbie can produce both in terms of quality and quantity. Here we are not talking about 30 hours but 30hours+7 years or 30hours+2 months.
People have different backgrounds and know-hows and methods, people have different hands.
So what is too hard for one person, can be a milestone in the past for another.Last edited by pixela; 30-08-2012, 12:18 AM.for my blog and tutorials:
