  • Live visuals/Aphex Twin

Here are a couple photos and some of the graphics I produced for Aphex Twin's performance here in OZ. We had live video feeds and a number of decks all mixed live to various screen configurations.

jacksc02, they get different people to do each city saves money not flying people around, VJ's (hate the term) are pretty far down the food chain. But I would love to do Auckland being my home town, next year I might combine a holiday with the show and do another city.

Taboo, yes he is the man, a very talented artist. I met him and it was definitely a case of me meeting him, I wouldn't be surprised if he took out a restraining order on me!

nlo, I took a week off from work (doing architectural rendering) to create the visuals for the show. every time I do one of these shows it costs me about 5 times what I get paid but it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

The ones over here in perth were pretty shocking.
But yours are great, how did you do them?
Were they live done via procdual generators hooked up to the music, or were they prior done and kind of integrated to the music?

i would like to do something like that.
do you use realtime soft, like electronica or rythm fuse?
              Reflect, repent and reboot.
              Order shall return.

It's all prerendered segments particleflow/AfterEffects put out to tape and DVD. We had 8 sources 2 VHS, 1 DVD and a number of cameras all the sources are run through a MX50 mixing desk (realtime mixer) then the final comp goes out to screen. You can mix the main sources in a variety of ways, the main way is with a mixer that controls the blend between sources (opacity) so you can cut between sources to the beat.

I also do club visuals but and have been attempting to work with AE but haven't had much luck.

Do you know where I could get some tutorials on Particleflow? or any of the more cool looking parts of AE?

I also have bother getting the best quality from my material when outputted to VHS and DVD. What settings would you recommend to get the best quality?

I use a V4 mixer and find it can further reduce the quality. The best response I get from visuals are the ones I make with VRay - strangely enough.

Well done on doing the Aphex Twin gig - outstanding !

                  Thanks

                      thats awesome work!!!

Any chance i could request a 1600x1200 ( or 1280x1024) render of that dude standing infront of the fire, with the white eyes....that would make a wicked desktop.

                      Cheers.

yeah I like AE as well.....but Combustion isn't bad either, and DF struck me kinda odd in the way it works....never really got into it.
I never had the chance to try shake, though......

Infrared: I don't know about tuts, I just read the manual when I get stumped. To maintain quality only render to lossy compression as the last step, I usually render out to MicrosoftDV in 1024mb segments from AE, then play straight of the timeline via firewire out of Premiere to DV tape. As far as Mpeg I find Premiere 6.5 with LSXmpeg then realDVD is the best solution.
Daforce: Many elements are DV in that shot and it wouldn't scale well, the guy is me shot with a homemade blue screen (coloured card) and my little Canon camera.
Da_elf: I like AE, most people only use 5% of a program anyhow. I know plenty of companies that tell their clients they use combustion+ but then use AE to get the job done. After all it's what you create with the software that matters not how big your SGI server is. I noticed you are in Barbados, lucky bastard. I used to live in Trinidad as a child, my family are from Trinidad, Barbados and Venezuela.
