  • procedural foam / bubbles setup

    Heya Folks,

I've got to make some kind of animated foam surface for a thing I'm working on at the minute which is a bit tricky! Got a setup that seems to work for foam at the minute but I've to also get it to animate well too. In the mean time though here's a displacement and procedural based setup for max 2012 64 that might be a nice starting point for someone to play with - pretty just layered cellular maps and some inversion / contrast.

Cool thanks John, will have a play a bit later and look at the setup more closely...

looks very convincing.. i think you need to work on the feel of soap materials more.. model/form shape is perfect!

Yeah I need to spend some time tweaking the white gaps between the foam - if I get time I might try and package it up into a friendlier material with maxscript.

nice one! I'd never even looked at composite maps until this post. very clever although perhaps a little too slow for production purposes.

It's nowhere near optimized for render times so I'd ignore the speed aspects at the mo

                  Ahh coolio.
Im curio: whats the foam surface for? - Are you the same Mr Connell that my mate Luis rates so highly?

                    No idea - probably not

The foam is actually more for a blistering effect that I'd got to do for a feature film - it's more like skin bubbling or foam than normal bubbles - quite tricky

John -this is awesome! I'm playing around with it and it can be rendered faster for sure, but it's a great setup. You have no idea how much time I spent trying to figure out how to get that kind of bubble/foam pattern on a job last year. I gave up This is very clever - thanks for sharing!
