  • sibenik... again :-)

Hello, I've been working on improving VRay's GI algorithms lately (among many other things); here are some interesting results. Calculation of GI for the first image is 1 minute 26 seconds, and for the second one - about 4 minutes (on Athlon 1800+, NOT multithreaded at the moment). There are no lights in the scene, just pure skylight...

    Best regards,
    Vlado

what's the cause for such a big time difference??........how is it improved?

        Impressive time !!!

I notice this is for the gi calculation and what about the render time ?
Do you work on it in the same way to decrease time rendering ?

When do you eat ? sleep ? render time is too fast now for you to have a rest ?

        Congrats !

good to hear, that the GI algorithms are also in progress.
i'm wondering how the rendertimes were improved against the actual version of vray. is it a matter of speed that was improved or another aspect, i.e. more accurate light solution...

You might want to look at this in comparison:

            http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~sibeni...ote.php?id=267
            http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~sibeni...ote.php?id=277

It probably cannot be directly compared since no lights other than skylight is involved as vlado stated but still quite fast, especially considering that there was no multithreading enabled.
Machine specs are the same (Athlon 1800)

                To sk_fly

This is not a question to ask !!

Wait for max 7 or 8
                ah ah ah !!

For me I return on max 5 because I loose too much time in rendering
                on max6 with vray.
But I do like Vray that one day will be a reference, I'm sure of it.

                We must leave them working...

                Bye !

@galf: why do you loose more time with max6 and vray? is there a difference between max6 and 5? would you explain what you mean...

                    2 Vlado:
it's nice that you're back to GI
the time you got is great, but the results IMO aren't practical
                    too rough and noisy

tony: lighting an interior scene from just skylight will always look kinda noise unless your willing to wait forever. but it looks better then what ive seen in the past. keep it up vlado!

maxxer: I think he was talking about not being able to use distributed rendering in max 6.x

                            2percydaman: i know that
don't get me wrong i realize that it's just a test and i wasn't trying to discourage Vlado from trying new things
i'm all up for it just like most ppl here

the key word in my post was "practical"
it's great that it only took 4 minutes
but does it look like a finished rendering worth showing to a client?

while the point was- if the "new" stuff works how long would it take to get the same scene to look finished?

the point was of the 4 minute rendering going down to a minute long (bottom vs top image)...

that is pretty practical, considering it means 4x the speed of all gi...???
