I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Haha! It really looks like a tiny explo. Nice.
Did you use any particles or is all that detail from basic sim?

Particles at start, as an emission start. Only a few frames. Then it is pure phx with some tweaks of course...

very good, only the cone at the start must be hidden. perhaps the initiating particles?
can you share some details, the grid size, the render times... is the new self illumination feature used?

Well. It was one of the first betas, where new algo was in deep testing state with crazy rendertimes Grid size is about 350million at the end. Used turbulence and vx, surprisingly good results. Also multipass and tweaked opacity graph. Sim time about 12hours for 300frames

            Nice one!
In the end the smoke looks photoreal, but like guys said the beginning needs some fixing.

Nah. I won't fix anything. It took me two weeks to render it

The smoke is the most awesome thing I've ever seen.

But I miss the rapid expansion blast that almost all CGI explosions lack.
