looks pretty good - but what are your Blender grass settings? The grass doesn't look flat enough, the blades seem too fat - it looks like a succulent.

I mean the blades look cylindrical. They should be flat. Is there a way to scale hair on one axis? (I don't know the answer, I am wondering myself.)

Hair is not the best option for grass, it's better to model a bunch of grass leaves, convert it to proxy and scatter with hair particle system.

That's what I have done before and it works pretty well. I was wondering if there was some trick to getting hair to look like grass, but sounds like there isn't.

Don't know how it works in VRay (haven't tested yet), but for Cycles set (in Particle settings):
Cycles Hair Rendering>Shape: Ribbons... then under Cycles Hair Settings set the Thickness
If it's not in VRay For Blender yet, consider it as a wish. Still following the development
