  • Porsche 911

    Hi,

It's been a while since I've posted anything, but having just completed the CGI for the new Porsche 911 (You can see the shots here), I wanted to post an image I've just finished using the 911 data.

It's entirely CGI, with no photographic elements or IBL, just VRay lights. The DOF and caustics are all rendered too.
I've included the raw VRay render, prior to any post-production, and a clay render. I've also done a quick timelapse of the making here for anyone interested.
I'd love to hear any thoughts on the shot.

    Cheers,

    John

Lovely.... especially nice to see caustics where you usually wouldn't bother with them!

I got really excited when I saw that you posted something new, huge admirer of your work Wilyman.

Did you use HDR softboxes in the VrayLight texture slots? What's the source of the light at the entrance, a dome light or a plane light?

Thanks Olli. I noticed that you had.
Beautiful Audi shots you've just put on there - Very impressive!
It'd be great to hear more about the work involved, if you felt like posting it on here.

Thanks Ahmed. Very kind of you to say so.

There are no HDR softboxes in the VrayLights. The plane lights have gradient ramps, and the spherical lights have nothing.
It's just a big plane light by the door - There's no dome light in the scene.

I'll open it up and make a screenshot of the set up, if I get a bit of time later on.

                Cheers,

                John

                    Beautiful, Wow!
You are surely mastering the art of lighting a car!
Could I ask about the sphere lights you are using? Are they switched off to reflection? As you don't seem to be getting hard reflections in the car from them?
Something which I've been struggling with for a while now, I'm jealous! Amazing work
                    Cheers, Ali

                      Another job well done!
Congrats John this looks awesome! Nice wall shader. How did you do the parking lines on the floor, is it just a mask?
Also, I'd be very interested in a post making of, to show how you take the RAW render to the final post image, or at least a screenshot of the layers, masks etc in PS

                        Thanks Ali.
No, the sphere lights are creating reflections - they're visible on the car body, but because there's so much reflection coming from the base and flake layers, the bright white spots just blend in to the middle of them.
If it was a solid paint, I'd have to rework the lighting slightly.

Parking lines are just a blend material with a very simple mask between them. Just four little white L shapes on a black background.
With regards to the post, did you see the video I linked to? It shows the layers building up one by one.

Thanks, will try to put them on here. The process was quite interesting, as it had all to be redone in the end...

@olli, I agree with John, and your IWC render is a thing of beauty.

Thanks for the answer John. Yes a screenshot would be very nice to see whenever you get a chance.
