  • Kiehl's Creme de Corps

Just a little character I came up with for Kiehl's cosmetics body butter.

Nothing too exciting technically but I also did a little 15 second making of video for their social media accounts.

I'd be interested in the setup of your shaders actually. Is there something special about them? Is there a lot of postproduction or is this an almost raw render?
          A.

So good! You should put a little coffee table book together with all your creations.

Yes indeed I was looking at a similar book with an artist that paints cartoon faces like these on buildings, i forgot his name though :/

I don't think there's anything special. I tend to use FastSSS2 a lot and usually in blend materials to add another layer of reflection.

I do do a lot of post production and colour adjustment...etc. I always try to get things as good looking as I can out of the render but I know that as soon as I start playing around with colours/curves in photoshop it will (usually) look much better.

If you like I'll dig out the psd file for this and post a before & after if you want to see what's done in post?

Sure, always helps to see what can be done with photoshop afterwards.

Here's a little gif flicking between the rather sad looking raw render and the final image.

As you can see, there's a lot of post work. Believe it or not, it's mostly curves adjustments, to boost the warmth in the shaded areas and generally make things more saturated. The mouth and rim light were painted on purely because it was quicker to do this than in Photoshop than spend hours tweaking the lighting/textures in max to emphasise these areas.

                      Any questions, let me know!

when i saw the little sculpt video i remember thinking "that mouth doesn't look deep enough to pick up that much shadow" - love your work by the way!

Indeed a lot of color adjustment, but when you can do it in PS; why not. I thought the creme fellow had a different material but in the raw doesn't seem like it, or they resemble eachother closely. One thing is that the text of the 'since ....' I can't really read the date. Could be on purpose as some kind of wear but the other letters aren't.

Yeah, I had to cobble the labelling together from some low res jpegs I got off google images, it could definitely have done with more work.

I had free reign to do pretty much what I wanted with this one, it just had to reflect the 'whipped' nature of the product.

Here are the (very rough/poor) concept sketches I did for the client to pick from
