I know where I've seen that effect before- it looks like that Aha video, 'Take on Me.'

Looks nice, but by "not adding movement to the hatching" do you mean so that the original hatchin will stay in place (This will work for a static scene but ovbiously for an animation it wont work) Most toon renders ive seen calculate for a per frame basis, and thus the hatching would move and create noise.

This animation reminds me of the older WB toons where the car sales mens shirt would have the plaid that didnt move, unfortunatly i think this is a very distracting thign in 3d.

In your opinion, how does v-rays toon shader compare for fR?

lordshaitan: Like I said in the first post, the hatching is just a screen mapped material, so adding "life" to the hatching is just a matter of adding some movement or random noise in the material. I didn't bother to do this for the test. The materials are simple blend materials with shadow/light falloffs. The VRayToon effect doesn't do hatching.

Compared the full featureset of finalToon this effect is of course pretty limited. It doesn't do shading or hatching, nor does it do separate line styles on a per object basis. It won't do things like dashed lines either. What it does, it does really well though. I think the lines it produces look great, and it is fairly fast and easy to work with. However, if you need the full control that you get from finalToon, this effect won't be a viable replacement.

The effect is actually intended as a quick example for the VRay SDK (I think the source will come with the SDK), so I don't think it will get any more features for this release. Maybe Vlado will expand on it after 1.5 though.

JungleJuz: The rendertimes are pretty quick. The head animation was around 9 secs a frame, the forklift about 55 secs a frame.

Btw, does anyone have an idea on how to create screen mapping that moves with the object pivot point on the screen?

I suppose one way would be to use camera mapping, and add some scripting that made sure the mapping-camera was always aligned between the object pivot point and the the rendering-camera. Any other ideas?

Here's an updated anim, with movement/noise added to the hatching:

Here is another VRayToon image. Again, only the lines are VRayToon. I rendered an inkpass and a colorpass, and the screenprinting look was done on the colorpass in Photoshop, then the two passes were comped.

                      Very nice toon effects !

U just show me the VrayToon feature - first time i see it in action ! I didn't know such effect were already near-ready, and thats a great surprise for me !
Where can we get more infos on VrayToon features ?
I found nothing more about it, and i currently have to keep my old max5 with finaltoon to get decent toon outlines...

                      Are Vraytoon effects animatable ?

Thanks you replying so fast, but i forgot to say i already saw your link.
I was asking anyway because on egz's example the lines seems to be generated with more options (they are irregular).
And i dont see any map slot for the toon parameters...
So i'm still asking how could egz achieve such toon line effect with so few parameters, or maybe did him add a noise modifier to the vehicle geometry...

Can u tell us a bit more, egz ?

                            Hi Yadla,

The documentation for the effect isn't updated. The VRayToon effect has more options in the latest beta version. You can use maps to control thickness, color and noise, among other things.

i wonder how can these guys work on so much features...
                              I'm impressed !
Now that vray crushed finalRender, there is VrayToon ready to kill finalToon

                                Hey Egz,

Very cool renders. I just got Vray and was playing around with the Toon Shader this afternoon. I was wondering how you went about creating your screen mapped hatching effect for your renderings. Could you please share with me how you went about this?

Also, is there an option in the Toon shading option to set extension lines for a more hand drawn feel?

                                Thanks in advance!

                                Jason
