  • not my 1st image, but 1st image post (updated)

    Hello everybody...

I thought after months... maybe years... of lurking about these boards, I'd post something of mine. This is from my first paying 3D assignment (I'm an illustrator/designer, practicing 3D on my own on the side). The bowling ball is supposed to be the client's logo in ball form, and for the time being I can't show the logo or mention the client's name.

    Nice!

the ball has too much bump for my taste. Shouldn't it be smoother?

I think the gaps in the wood are to big. don't you? and too reflective also

other then that... it's very good.

personally i would build more of the scene, add some DOF and some motion Blur to get the realism up.

I agree with Natty DOF, motion blur would make the image alot nicer, as for the bumps on the ball, have you ever been to a bowling alley and not brought your own ball, holy crap those balls have huge cuts, bumps, and ridges all over them but if that is the case maybe go the same direction with the pins and floor to create a mood. Of course it is always what the client wants right?...keep posting

thanks for the critiques, guys. as for DOF and motion blur, i suggested them but the client decided against them, so *shrug*. the lane reflections and black lines were exaggerated because the lane looked flat and dull. remember, it's not always about recreating real life! otherwise we could've just taken a photo.
as for the bump, it doesn't look as harsh with the company logo wrapped around the ball (they look harsh here because it's white on black). but they look VERY harsh in the final render, 36 inches by 36 inches at 150 dpi!!!

Dump your client its an idiotic request and idiotic concept... i know guys, i had guts to say it, you seem to be very polite in here but lets face it, we all need critisism

As you can see, ezrhythm, this is one client I'd rather not dump ... I finally got permission to release the image. Here it be. The final final output had text and graphics over it, but this is the raw image:

Hah, I can see why you wouldn't want to tell the client to go away.
