The three cars in the range shot were all rendered separately, and each one was 12000px wide.
The final resolution of the finished shot was 21184 x 10820.

Probably too much really, but better safe than sorry.

Awesome work John and damn big too. Is that size typical? There is certainly a trend for larger and larger outputs but must reach a limit at some point.

I wouldn't have said that size was typical.
If they'd just wanted a shot of three cars, I don't think I would've gone that large, but because the Mustang was also going to be used by itself in a separate ad, it had to be big, and it made sense to do all three cars at the same scale.
There weren't any guidelines from the client, just that they were going to be shown on some very large billboards.

Most of the photographers we work with tend to shoot on an IQ180 these days, which is just over 10000px wide.
Even that seems much more than most shots would reasonably need, but I guess it leaves more scope for cropping.

Thanks John, I have similar experiences with typical sizes being requested for key art being at around 14-20000 px wide which, I suppose, is to cover any eventuality.
