  • 87 Park by Renzo Piano

Haven't posted anything in a long time but this is a project we became very fond of here at The Boundary and I thought was worth sharing.

Attached are 5 of my favourite images, you can see the full set here: http://www.the-boundary.com/87-park/

I lost count of how many still images we did and we also did about 90 seconds of animation in total. All of the animations were rendered on rebusfarm, and feature many many gigabytes of animated proxies (make with growfx).

The animated clips were for the website www.eightysevenpark.com but we put them together as a short film as well.

        Good stuff.
Im really interested in what you and others do regarding background photography?
Whenever we are working on larger scale stuff like this, usually they are not somewhere we can go and visit to take photos, and the clients dont understand how to take usable photos.

Who directs them then? The client or you?

I just remind them that the photo dictated the lighting setup.

Sure, im thinking more so the angles that they photograph?

Quite often we will come up with many of the camera angles (in max I mean), as clients don't always know how to choose good ones

Impressive work Peter ! Very slick (I mean, in a good way ) The light in those dusk views are hard to balance and you always manage to do it so well.

I'm intrested on how you did the carpet in the interior (dusk view in the complete set) and the towel in the bathroom (so fluffy !) simple texture, hair & fur or vray fur? + a special shader? I've managed to do the "sheep fur" quite well but never this "contomporary rug" look.

I see you fell in love with the Gervasoni lounge chair too

PS One last (specialist) question : how much lumen do you put on your candle lights ? I always need to push them a bit to make them noticable.

It's difficult to judge one of my "masters of the archviz universe" but the only little little little thing that it's on a lower quality level are the caustics for the still images.

                        They seems to much fake...

For the animated clips I think they are perfect ... but for the stills...not.. particularly in the lobby/main entrance images.

Apart this... stunning quality as you get us used to...

thanks Alex, the client got a local photographer involved. We were able to tell her the type of shots and feel we needed, and from exactly where.

the animated pot close-up was 'real' caustics, the rest we had to fake with projector maps but we never quite got round to getting them look as good as we wanted

thought were beautiful the first time I saw them, and they just get better each time. the animations look especially brilliant, haven't had the chance to see them all together till now, and they're impressive. quality.
