Volksbühne by Bertrand Benoit, on Flickr

Here’s another project that I’m just going to call finished even though it isn’t. This is my interpretation of the Volksbühne, a theatre and yet another Berlin landmark. Although the architecture has a definite authoritarian feel, the building was actually built in 1913-14 to host cheap theater plays for the working masses. It was extensively redesigned after the War following its partial destruction and retains its popular, experimental and anarchist creds up to this day.

I really suffered through this project, losing myself in tiny invisible details. It was a drag. I guess I never really was a huge fan of the building, which feels like it could be the Gotham City Opera House. So I’m letting it go now, expressing my ambivalence by throwing in an alien invasion and biblical flooding.

On the nerdy side, you will note the use of scanned trunks on the trees, something I’ve been experimenting with lately. Check my blog for how to get these models.

I made extensive use of ItooSoft’s RailClone and Forest Pack Pro for the vegetation and entourage.

This was done pre-denoiser, so here's hoping you'll forgive the grain.

Thanks. That's really kind. I rarely have become so fed up with a personal project. Not sure why...

You must spend a ton of ton of time on materials. Nice work, as usual!

your work is great Bertrand , just don't take such big break from 3d like me , i also got bored/uninspired of 3d and started to do other stuff i would say to do personal work you should feel like in the mood have the energy to do it otherwise you will feel the work is stale/ boring.

I think he lost interest in the project because he doesn't like the building. At least that is how I read it.

to be honest not a fan of these (when compared to your normal absolutely amazing work) even though Im a fan of this building and its history.

Ah! No! I haven't lost interest in 3D. That is not going to happen I don't think.
I just lost interest with this scene, I think because I didn't quite like the way it was going and realized fixing it would be a huge amount of work and perhaps not worth it. I'm also pretty ambivalent about the building itself. Not a huge fan.

Well the quality is there, as always... But for me personally the interest in the subject just isn't.
