Here is a rendering for a client. The house on the left is a historic structure from 1895. It will be lifted, new basement put under, renovated. An existing addition to the right will be demolished and replaced with the addition shown.

I photographed this a couple of weeks ago the day before the first of series of snow storms made everything white. Client wanted summer scene so some photo re-touching and etc to make what is actually December appear to be July. The time of day for the background photo was the only time that the sun really shines on this property. A couple of hours later and the sun has dropped behind the mountain ridge (behind the camera).

In general it is "good" for quick presentation and with a bit of photoshop it could look nice like this (I hope u don't mind )

In a more serious tone it deffenittly could use some work in 3d.. for example :
1-At first trees' green color is waaay over saturated imo and your sky color is a bit dark too..try to tune that down to get some thing natural( look at the green in the background ).
2-Planks and roof top can't look realistic with only texture especially for hero objects in the shot.. modeling and displacement are the way to go .
3-That soft shadow in forground as idea to add depth is good but something sharper would work better imo and your object need to "breath " so maybe keep the bottom part of the image just a bit brighter .
4-Greenary in general have translucent effect even if it is sometime not that notecable but it's definitely worth it to add .try to use 2sided material for that and don't forget the reflection.
5- Most clients want their renders to be super clean but adding a bit of dirt/dust/smudges/rust..etc can add to realism even in a very small amount.
      Best regards,

M.Max thank you for your reply and review!

I agree with you in the most part. I looked at it after I posted it and realized it was too saturated, mainly in the greens in the vegetation as you correctly point out. The background greens and the blue sky are actually part of an older photograph I took for a different nearby project many years ago. I had to add it over the photo I'm using to simulate summer. Those are the colors of green and sky blue in the photo. I think I may have used a polarizing filter and the sky is very blue here but regardless that is too blue for the rendering and reminds me of "how I used to work". Same with the greens. A very tight timeline and demanding clients apparently caused me to focus on other aspects and let that slide. I'm going to try to adjust it today before I leave for 10 days. Looking to de saturate but maybe not as much as in your example. Also with respect, I will not be adding the motorcycle rider.

Not sure what you mean by planks but the roofs and siding and other elements all have vray displacement. It seems to be working funny on the shingle roof, esp porch. I will look into that as well.

Regarding tree shadow. I put a 3D tree behind the camera and that is the shadow it is casting. Agree it would be better if sharper.

The background photo I'm using is below for reference.

I did this rendering and this other rendering http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...16-small-house over the past 9 days including site photography. Probably would have benefited form more time but client deadline with multiple materiel variation and me leaving town.... that's my excuse<g>

I will, hopefully, post an updated rendering later today addressing some of the things you point out.

Thanks again for your very helpful reply!

The camera and sun angles leave a lot to be desired.... The camera seems to be focussed on the white picket fence and the sun is directly behind the camera illuminating the perpendicular facades evenly.

Hi and thank you for your review. I agree with you but as explained above, that is really the only time of day that the sun shines on that lot during this time of year. I matched the rendering into the photo and that dictated, camera position and sun angle. Sun is no real directly behind camera it is off to the right but not as far as ideal. I would have preferred to have the sun coming fro the left but that is not possible at this location.

I was showing part of the adjacent existing house to the right but after a few versions the client had me screen it out with the pine tree. So originally camera angle was locked to the perspective match of the photo and that has not changed.

Thanks again for you reply and comments!
