This is a house in town with ski runs shown in the distance. I'm working on the opposite (South) view which will be a summer scene and I will add that to this thread as soon as it's "done". As always I welcome any comments /critique.

Looks great. The corners of the stone base look like they have gaps. Are you using displacement?

Thank you for your reply. Yes using displacement and it opened up the corners. I painted out most of that but will improve per your helpful observation.

Here is the other view. I did one with vray sun/sky and another with vray sun/hdri as a test. I like the sun/sky better than the hdri. If I worked on hdri/sun multipliers a bit more I suspect I could get hdri to look more like the sun/sky version (better defined shadows).

Have you tried rounding off the corners of geometry before using displacement? It has worked for me in the past..

            Hi Alan,

No I have not tried that but I will and thanks for that tip.

I often invert the displacement map (if needed) and use a negative displacement and to avoid this corner opening up issue. with the stone base texture that just wasn't working it wasn't producing the desired effect. The negative displace seems to work best for things like mortar joints, siding/shingle courses... which makes sense.

Thanks again I'm definitely going to try that.

Yeah, it's been a while so please let me know if it worked for you...IIRC I had to adjust the radius of the corner a bit to balance between "corner cracks" and the look of the texture...
