  • New to GI. Interior and exterior - Vray free

    Hello.

Today I discovered this Vray forum, and I am truly impressed about the superb quality of most images!

I have been working a long time exclusively with 3dsmax scanline renderer and its standard lights, because of tight deathlines and the need for speed.

Just lately I have been trying Vray free in some of my images and I am considering buying the full version of Vray to be able to render animations.

Until today I thought my work was allright, but comparing it to the renders seen here, I think I have a lot of work ahead to reach the average level of this forum.
    So lets start today!

I post two images (done with vray free) and wait for yours comments. Please be critic. I really feel I need improvement. Specially on interiors. But I am not sure how to improve my art.

It is maybe a lack of artistic skill? I feel my images are a bit flat and lacking realism.
Or it is maybe lack of detailed modeling?
I haven't tried raytraced material effects or Vray materials jet, I just keep using the standard ones. Could this be important?
    Could render params be improved?
    Some comments on scene composition?

Keep waiting for the opinions of those skilled artists out there...they will be highly appreciated.

    thanks in advance!

PS: In both images, trees and plants were added in Photoshop. People and reflections were added in a second pass and composited in Photoshop. A very subtle volumetric in the interior image was also rendered in a separate pass. Lighting was simple, just environment skylight plus sunlight. Render times were very low, something that I atribute to the relative opennes of the images (little diffuse cross-bouncing), and relatively low polycount (less than 35K polys each scene).

    Welcome to the forum Chapu!

Sorry, but I can't see the images. Just those dreaded x's.

One thing I think you will find is that vray is very fast compared to the other renderers out there with image quality that is second to none. But, please don't expect scanline speed with GI. It takes a bit longer but the results can't be beat once you get the hang of the program.

In this business GI is the future. But your headed in the right direction by using vray!

Look forward to seeing your renders.

    Tony

I can see the images and they are great! The first image would truly look better with some vray displacement grass.

        Hi Chapu...

Nice Images. However, have u tried losing the RPCs? I dont know but it somehow ruined the composition... try reducing the illumination of the Rpcs and try to match it with the lighting mood.

First image is fantastic. RPC always makes me cringe.

I really like the first image .... the RPC's are ok ... the second image you have some huge bricks .. but the image has a nice ambient light to it.

              Thanks folks for your time.

Percydaman; yes you are totaly right! Grass would be a plus, I have seen some images in this forum with displacement grass and it looks terrific. The question is, what is the best procedure to make grass? Is vray free capable of managing that kind of displacement?

Da_RoCk, JHalton; I agree RPCs are a less than perfect solution for stills. The point is that I dont get the time to photograph my own people beacuse of tight deathlines. On the other hand, having invested quite a lot of money in RPC, I dont have the cash to buy other photographic libraries now. Anyway I tried to match the RPCs colors with the lighting mood, as I composed all RPCs in photohop. I guess I will make a further effort to match the colors!

natty; About the bricks, today the client made the same complaint. So ill reduce the scale of them!

              Any further C&C welcome!
