  • First image from Surreal Structures, a WIP

    Hi Everyone,

    This is just getting started:

The only thing textured so far is the carpet, so what's happening with the ceiling and pendant fixtures is pretty indistinct.

Anyway, I figured it was time to jump in and post something.

Ooh, very nice carpet indeed! And I like the daylight coming in at the back too. Keep us posted!

carpet bump is outa scale... and why it took 40minutes to render?

I'm not storing the Vray light illumination (there are 4 lights). I know that increases render time. Also, the luminaire models are very heavy (client-supplied). I think they accounted for a good 10 minutes of the time. The GI calculation took less than 5 minutes. [edit] That was a lie. I just re-ran the calc (with the don't render switch) and it took 18 min 27 sec.

Agreed about the carpet, but it's displacement. As with all the textures, it will take several iterations and lots of tweaking before I'm happy.

        Here is an update:

When I render without the luminaires and reuse the IR map, render time is 16 min 53 sec.

        PS. Hi Tim.

I think using the displacement for the carpet is adding to the render time alot.

looking nice. have you rendered a version without carpet displacement and used a bump map instead? might look nearly as nice and render alot quicker too.

yeah, as percy said I'd try bump first...and see if you can get away with it......if you do make sure you set you bump retty high....sometimes in the 300 or 400s for the bump chanell......the GI tends to wash it out......that's why I found it need to be pretty high....

              nice work so far...

looking great!. I think the displacement on the carpet works really well which you can see at the base of the partition near the metal table leg that metal looks really nice too). Materials all look really good to me anyway

personally i think 40 mins is an acceptable rendertime. Average images im doing are taking 2-3 hours although thats mostly exteriors so far

Here is an update and a couple of detail shots:

Looks like I need to crop the Pollack bitmap.

The carpet is now a bump map.

i think it looks better as bump...the displacement version looked a bit too "plush" but that could have just been the amount of displacement

anyways, i think its more than acceptable change when you compare the render times

Very good Frances. The scene is evolving nicely.

All the chairs are Herman Miller Idrops and so is the conf. table. I purchased the coffee urn from Tsquid (the white mug was a free download). I modeled the rest in Rhino.
