WOW! I've really strugled with controlling displacement.
I would love to see the image you used to create that. And maybe an explanation of how you went about making a material to create that effect. Did you start with a photo and then tweak it using disp settings?
Or Z-Brush/PS?
Can you talk about your workflow?
I am not going to post the map yet, because I want to work it out in my current project first(indeed on a chair Daelf, that's what I made it for )
But I will tell the workflow, which is in fact quite simple:
I modeled the a few strings just like it is done with reed chairs. In top view I made a zbuffer image. Then just cut it to a tileable format.
Put it in the displacement slot, add a displacement mod to the object and check use material (3d displacement). In this case the height was 4, edge length was set to 2.
As for the material: simple gray vray material, white reflection, 0.7 glossiness, unchecked trace reflections.
As for ram usage: while rendering ram usage increased to about 700MB
