in the render theory section i have a post i started doing some tests to fake ies lights by using hdri images. its not as fast as a simle gradient ramp like frances uses but its more accurate looking. but i agree ies lights are way too slow.

I'm sure someone who knows what they're doing could make a projector map that looks much better.

Hdri images would be faster than IES data?

Hi Frances! Im about to do an interior animation of a house, and i love your lightning, can u tell me a bit on how you lit it? Or can u show me a wire so i can have a better look to it?
        Thanks an great work!
        Best Regards.

I don't know, what Fran is doing looks pretty good to me considering the time savings compared to ies lights. I haven't tried yet, but I bet the method can be tweeked for different effects.

Thanks Fran. I'm going to use it. IES is just to damn slow for me too.

yeah. im sure someone can do a little more research than i did but these were my finding using an hdri in the projector slot of a spot light rather then using an ies light

              Hi Jorge,

I don't know if the render setup I use would be suitable for animation. I'm pretty sure there are other methods described in the forum that produce as good or better results in less time. Another thing, I'm sure that photon mapping or light map for the secondary bounces would be faster, but I haven't used either of those methods.

With that said, as soon as I get a chance, I'll be glad to post a screen grab of the wire frame. It may not be until tomorrow though.

also did some tests on this in the past
what i found to be quite controllable was using a gradient ramp set to radial and only grayscale colors
the ramp spans the light cone from center (left) to the end of hotspot (right)
so you'd have to make the hotspot almost as large as your falloff angle
one could also paint maps but so far gradients have worked well

I took some measurements of the light pattern of a real light-bulb with my old gossen exposure meter and used the relative values as suggestions for the gradient.
                so
                100ev---------50ev--------40ev---60ev---40ev--------10ev
would translate to the following white values
                100%---------50%---------40%---60%---40%---------10%----0%
                hsv would be
                0
                0
                255-----------128 ...
finally you can also add some minor noise to the pattern to make it more irregular

                cheers,

                mike

Thank you for making me feel not the only one being annoyed by the ssssllllooooooowwwwness of rendering IES lights. I'm currently doing a restaurant with a lot of Erco spots and the rendering is just too slow for words at the smallest resolution.

I think I'll try your gradient approach, Fran.

                    Hi Fran,

Excellent images, what else very nice to see how you are mastering VRay too!

Wise apporach to spot lights, in this bussines of ours, may be not for ever, but it still stands the rule: better faked than literal, if it is not what it truly is, but what it seems it is, ok, not sure that makes proper sense in english.

                    Cheers anyway.

Afterword, may be we are the last using 1.09.03r (you Marc and myself)

interesting point made last night by vlado is to render photometric lights with shadow map rather than Vrayshadows as this make a big speed improvement when using IES lights...

I dont know about you guys, but ill be trying this !

Sure, that's the WAY... I once made a scene with 18 Photometric IES
lights just in one room... with the SHADOW Map....SHADOW it renders
about 4-5 times FASTER.... and the result was QUITE SATISFYING...

Well that's nice to know - now. Too bad I didn't know then. I'm relatively new with VRay and was told to use VRay shadows for faster rendering times. Does this work for 1.0903r as well?

I searched all of Vlado's posts for the last 7 days and couldn't find it either. I will certainly test this the next chance I get though.
