  • Quadro P5000 16gb with 2x 1080 Ti 11gb

I was thinking about building a machine with 1x Quadro P5000 16gb and 2x GTX 180 Ti 11gb (not sli). I will attach my monitors to the Quadro and use it with the 1080 Ti cards for rendering with VRay. Is this a feasible configuration? Are there any drawbacks I should be aware of?

Do you plan to render on the Quadro as well or will you use it only for the viewport?

I planned on using the Quadro for the viewport and rendering. However, the GTX 1080 Ti cards would only be used for rendering.

Alternatively, I could put the GTX 1080 Ti cards in a second computer. What would be the preferred approach?

I would suggest to keep everything in one computer, if possible. Also, I would suggest to get cheaper/smaller GPU dedicated for viewport and 2 x 1080ti dedicated for reddening.
For example, Quadro P4000 for display (or even cheaper one like 1060) and 1080tis for rendering.

Quadro indeed has special drivers which benefit some viewports. NVIDIA have made those drivers available in the Titan as well.

Mhm, I?ve got a question about this setup. Is it possible to use only 1 card for the viewport and take advantage of the larger VRAM of the dedicated rendering cards??

          P4000 8GB (viewport only)
          1080 Ti 11GB
          1080 Ti 11GB

Can I use 11GB of VRAM or 8GB? I always thought the weakest card counts.

Only the GPUs that render matter. You can choose which GPUs to use for rendering in most V-Ray host integrations.
