noctua air all the way. the biggest you can fit in the case (check clearances) They have thread ripper specific ones btw, u14s TR3 is the biggest one you can get

It's no fun when you find your water cooler has run dry!

Well my Threadripper 3970x Workstation arrived and due to some miscomunication it came with the DEEPCOOL Castle 360EX ARGB 360mm AIO. So now I have an Air cooler in the box I don't need but will keep it just in case.
Anyway I am now 19 hrs into a 3ds Max V-ray render staying at 100% load on all 32 cores at about 3900MHz and the temp is pretty much staying 73-75 C. According to CoreTemp it hit 81 at some point. So maybe the cooling will be sufficient.
Thank you everyone for your help!
This is the most expensive computer I've ever bought, my first AMD and also by far the best rendering machine I've ever owned. I'm really excited at what I can do now.
Looking forward to using Phoenix on it once I get the activation worked out

        Hi Paul -

That's very interesting what you're saying about the RAM speed you achieved.
        I've just bought (4 x 32 gb) of the Samsung RAM M378A4G43MB1-CTD
to use in my new Threadripper build - 3970X

Are those the modules you're managing to run at 3000 and 3200? If so, what timings worked for you?

I chose that RAM after much umming and ahhing --- mainly because the guys at Puget use it, and this build:

        https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/G8hypg

Also, one day I will upgrade to 256gb

FYI I went with this cooler - Dark Rock Pro TR4 as this review seemed to suggest it performed better than the Noctua (the brand I've always used in the past)

MSI has that option - memory try it. So, you can try RAM presets until its good. Since no XMP there. My preset 3200@20-20....
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Thanks...I'm waiting for my parts to arrive before I can complete the build so will play with the memory settings then.
            Mobo is:

            Gigabyte trx40 aorus xtreme

            On a related note -

Has anyone done any real world performance testing using Phoenix FD or TYFlow at different RAM speeds to see if it runs the sim faster?

The only benchmarks / videos I can find about this is all about gaming - not much out there about real application performance.

            This:
            https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...d+Installation

Talks about the importance of Bus Speed, not memory bandwidth.

Any real world advice / examples welcome.

Well, phx is faster. H not that. But, higher RAM speed with lower latency better, than not having it Tho, for AMD 3200 is optimal.

My G.skill Royal 4X32 3200 is recognized in my BIOS as 3200 RAM but is only running at 2666MHz for some reason. I can't figure out how to get it to work at 3200. I'm using ASUS Prime TRX 40 Pro.
ASUS tech # is not avail due to plandemic. Any ideas?

how much of a difference will the ram being at 2666 over 3200 be? Just curious.

75 vs 95gbs and lower latency you can look at mine aida reports. phx i dont remember.

I know you guys like to max it out....
I did that, too but I could not live with the resulting fan noise
                        Therefore i throttled my 3970x to 180W...
this has only a small performace impact but improves temps and noise a lot.
i got a slighly lower CB (like -10%) but i can work without getting ear cancer .-)
