  • Cpu and gpu builds

Is as general a sense, regarding workstation builds and rendering (not simulations)...isnt it a little counter intuitive to buy a 64 core cpu machine and then add multiple 2080ti? Surely you would go down one route or the other, if cost was an issue? Seems to be a lot of hardware threads where people are doing both and im trying to figure out if theres a good reason based on performance / $$$.

Im working remotely for a studio who uses both GPU and CPU for different jobs. I was just speccing up a 3990x and dual RTX card machine today (price made my eyes water). Right now Im on a TR 1950x + GTX 1080TI rendering in CUDA hybrid. Personally Id like the flexibilty if Im able to afford it. But currently Im only adding another 1080TI to beef up my rendering, as Im waiting till autumn for the new GFX cards to be released before I invest in a new machine build. It would be nice to see some like for like tests between CPU / GPU / HYBRID. Ive tested some CPU vs GPU here and got roughly the same render time to achieve the same quality. Not ran that test in hybrid yet.

Generally though, if I hadnt been working for this new company who use GPU, Id have been buying one mid range RTX card to go with the 3990x.

Hi , thanks for reply, yeah the flexibility part I can see if the cash is there, im just struggling to decide which route to go down again, last time i got a couple of render machines, but cant help feeling i would have been better going the gpu route.

I use CPU and GPU rendering as well, and I use other engines alongside Vray. This is why I spend on both for my personal rig
CPU/GPU rendering has advantages/disadvantages.. Vray is my first choice for CPU rendering and Octane for GPU rendering(still use Vray GPU on some stuff but honestly so many issues and limitations)
I don't mind going full GPU if I freelance again.. and would still need to do CPU rendering for older projects

Does anyone know if Vray have sorted the Hybrid rendering for RTX mode? Works in CUDA but I read an article a few months back that it wasnt ready for RTX. So buying a rapid CPU and RTX cards would mean either/ or. Not both as Ive been using with CUDA. (Having said that Im sure any reasonably decent RTX rig would outperform an CUDA hybrid setup)
