Part of getting stuck to GPU rendering, I can have a 5k render on GPU and my machine still would be usable fully (using a different GPU for monitors/viiewport)
I have a 3070 and 3090 now, Only using the 3090 for rendering...
Even for CPU rendering, I leave 4 threads off so that I can do modeling or Nuke.. leaving 4 threads (2 cores off) barely affects rendering speed
And nice build you have super gnu I think we talked about your build in the past?
If we did, then I'm sure I mentioned VRMs and Mobo choice for this CPU..
Even back at the 2990wx, High-end Mobos were necessary .. Creator and Zenith as well
yeah, you did suggest a better motherboard, but id already ordered it, from another country (its a long story) it had certain attributes i loved (4x dual width gpu slots in atx form factor) and being a bit of a "testa dura" as we say in italy, i was convinced that a 1000w rated VRM should have no issues with the cpu... and theoretically its true, the actual regulators are 8x 90amp jobbies which should have no trouble with 3990x even drawing 600w... . however the cooling on the board most definitely *isnt* rated for 1000w whatever the box says. and there are several other minor voltage regulators which seem to not like being hammered (maybe the ram ones?) anyway, next time ill listen
Would it be worth someone (Muhammed?) creating a sticky with the latest recommended build(s)? There seems to be so many hardware threads at the moment and they seem to mostly come down to the same issues / recommendations. You could have a high end version (3990) and a midrange (3790) set up, a rendernode and high end and mid range gpu versions. They seem like the 5 that keep coming back in the threads.
Just a thought, I'm always browsing through the threads just to see what the latest specs are as I feel like I'm continually on the cusp of ordering a new pc. Would be nice to have a single thread that can be updated when needed.
It would be nice to go to these builders like BOXX for this, but they are so overpriced and seem to have old hardware specified. Almost like they purchased in bulk to same money, marked way up to make more money, and are trying to sell things off, They wait for the new stuff to come down in price and repeat the cycle. I don't know, just guessing. DELL, you can't find hardware that isn't a year old.
Thanks for your suggestion dean_dmoo , I will work on one soon. Give it a day or 2
Could also update it from time to time
glorybound BOXX and DELL pricing are just a matter of greed, and their build quality is not worth this extra you pay over MSRP
DELL is worse, they scam people on warranty and they still use their own proprietary parts, which is gonna make upgrading the system quite hard in future(even from Dell directly)
Dell's customer support is terrible, this is been shown times and times again.. these people honestly don't seem to care https://youtu.be/Go5tLO6ipxw?t=178
Maingear on the other hand have excellent build quality, which alone makes up for the extra you pay over MSRP. They have some of the best custom loops I have worked with, and they design their own cases.
Their support is very good(from experience) and their pricing actually is not that expensive .. it will still come cheaper than BOXX or Dell
There is also https://www.instagram.com/ws.computer/
You can have up to 11 GPUs per render node, Sebastian designs his own cases and custom loops for this kind of builds as well
Best value is building on your own if possible..
This is a comment to very first comment in this thread. I think it is already a too late advice but I think you had to use DDR4 3200 RAM instead of 2666.
glorybound did you ever look into Puget Systems? Much less than BOXX for the same custom build. The Threadripper that I configured came in at $11,500 including 128 RAM and 2x 3090's. I'm still on the fence whether or not I need two, but as the GPU market matures, it seems to make sense. Then again, we have a CPU farm.
Just change mine (Bi Xeon) 5 years old (7000€ value) for a Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G (1000€). Honestly, I believed that looking at the workstation as an investment is over, you must look at it as disposable instead. From my point of view, you better have to used online renderfarm or to get several PC for less than 700€.
Old habbit keep us away from logical change.
