  • Instead of couple of drives in PC, would you go for NAS?

    Hi all

Are there any desktop NAS devices availabe (hmm usb or lan) that can give you same speed as having those drives in your pc? For example 3 or 4 drives using raid 5 and about 2TB storage space? How does those things work for file permissions etc.
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

No matter how fast your drives are, the bottleneck will occur through the network.
The desktop NAS at the consumer level are almost always slow. For like a D-Link 323, your probably getting a transfer around 10-12 mbps max mainly due to the onboard memory and hardware. It's fine for most people streaming audio and video, but if you have several computers constantly sending information, it will bomb out on you.

For something more like Windows Server 2008 without hardware RAID striping, you're looking at 30-50 if set up properly.

Some dedicated Terrastations and higher end NAS get up around 60-75 - at least I would say on average but then you're looking at over a thousand dollars.

NASLite server has a current problem interacting with Windows 7 computers. It has something to do with Samba not being updated to support some of the newest Windows 7 transfer methods. It works but you'll occasionally get a "file currently in use" error.

It's always much faster to have your files stored locally.

I should add that if you're running DR, pulling the textures locally while rendering is not a good idea. It's much better to have a dedicated server for that.
