  • Just Finished Testing Dual 580's vs Dual 680's

So we ordered a dozen machines with Core i7 3960x overclocked to 4.6ghz. Half of them have gtx 580 3gbs and the other half are gtx 680 2gbs. We tested duals of each against Vray RT and Lumion:

Dual GTX 580s - Vray RT scene (Seconds) 138.9
Dual GTX 680s - Vray RT scene (Seconds) 130.3

Dual GTX 580s - Lumion FPS (Large scene) 26fps
Dual GTX 680s - Lumion FPS (Large scene) 27fps

I guess the important thing to note is only the marginal difference in times for vray with the new cards. Hopefully drivers or updates fix that, but as of right now, looks pretty dismal and we are not ordering any more 680's until the 4bgs come out or the amount of cuda cores actually has a bigger benefit to RT.

I'm about to build a new comp and all I'm left to decide is which graphic card to get. Seems like we're screwed on all fronts, from Quadros being ridiculously expensive to the gamer cards being crippled on purpose.

I'd be interested to know how these two compare in viewport performance, either in Nitrous or Direct3D (both would be great )

        Thanks!

Apparently, the 680 is definitively more powerfull for gaming but not for 3d rendering.

We will be looking into the viewport performance comparison very shortly in Revit and Max.

I think there's totally no point of paying more and getting 680. It's only around 5% faster than 670! I think 4GB 670 is the best bang for buck ever.

Thanks for the advice. I have to wait for a custom cooling solution.
